PARIS/MONTE CARLO: National cross-country champion Khalid Zoubaa has become the fourth French middle-distance athlete in eight months to test positive for an illegal substance. That was reported by L'Equipe on Thursday. The paper said traces of the blood-boosting banned agent erythropoietin (EPO) were found in the 29-year-old Zoubaa's A sample following the military national championships in Pau on January 27. Also today IAAF confirmed the ban for steeple-chaser Nordine Gezzar who tested positive at two competitions – meeting in Strasbourg on June 19 2006 (winning in would be PB 8:15.04) and national championships in July 2006 (initially second place 8:30.08) at Tomblaine. His two years ban starts only in December 2006 and finishes in December 2008 that means he will miss the Olympic Games in Beijing. Presence of the prohibited substances Finasteride and Norandrosterone in his doping control samples were confirmed by IAAF.

Euromeetings

STOCKHOLM: Euromeetings will discuss the posibility to ban American former three-times Olympic champion Marion Jones from their races when they meet at their usual Spring Meeting on March 1 in Birmingham, the site of European Indoor Championships. The Euromeetings Group is also likely to close its doors on Olympic 100m champion Justin Gatlin, who failed a drugs test last year. Rajne Soderberg, the president of Euromeetings, said according to the news agencies that they would recommend that Jones and all athletes associated with Jamaican-born American coach Trevor Graham were barred from their meetings. "We shall not stop any athlete from running in Europe because that is the prerogative of individual meeting officials, but we shall recommend that Marion Jones and all Trevor Graham's athletes are barred from running in our meetings," Soderberg told Reuters on Tuesday. "The Euromeetings Spring meeting will discuss the doping issue in athletics and athletes to be invited and those not to be invited, but it is still up to individual meeting directors to invite whom they wish to invite," said Soderberg. Also on the agenda are issues like calendars for 2007, 2008 and 2009, athlete´s contracts and other items of importance for the European meetings.
