LEIPZIG (GER): Julia Hutter won the highly anticipated pole vault women competition with 455cm. German Record holder Caroline Hingst was only fifth. Cathleen Tschirch emerged as a new force winning the 200 m in 23.19, what means european leading time of the season. Bastian Swillims was better than in Dusseldorf and went first time under 46 seconds indoors at 400 m with 45.99. The 2001 European Juniors bronze medallist got closer to his outdoor best of 45.83. ANCONA (ITA): Massimiliano Donati won the 60m sprints in very good 6.62 during the second day of Italian Championships. Andrea Bettinelli confirmed number one high jump position registering 229 cm. GENT (BEL): New national record by Eline Berings at 60 m Hurdles 8.07 highlighted the action at one day national championships. The former goes for Sylvia Dethier 8.09 in Hoboken Mar 7, 1993. Both top stars Kim Gevaert and Tia Hellebaut did not competed. They are saving the energy for European Indoor Championships, Hellebaut is going to jump after slight flu in Stockholm on Tuesday and Gevaert should compete on Friday in Paris. Top results – 60 m: 1. BELFAST (IRL): New national record by Paul Hession at 60 m (6.63) was the higlight of two days action at Odyssey Hall in Belfast. Unfortunately european leader Dave Gillick did not run the 400 m due to flu. Czech Olympic Champion Roman Sebrle showed solid shape with 15.73 shot, 8.11 and 8.13 hurdles and 22.78 200 m. „I am satisfied the shape is coming, at the nationals next weekend I will contest hurdles and pole vault. LINZ (AUT): Experienced Elmar Lichtenegger achieved internationally the best result of second day programme with 7.73 in heats. After that a team for Birmingham composed of 6 athletes was announced – 5 men (Zeller-400, Rapatz-800, Steinbauer, Weidlinger-3000, Lichtenegger-60mH) and 1 woman (Muller-60). Top results – 400 m: 1. ZAGREB (CRO): The star of the championships (only sprints and jumps, no oval available) was Andrea Ivancevic who won both 60 m races. Mateja Gregoric registered new shot put national record 15.39 m. ESPINHO (POR): European Indoor Champion from Madrid Naide Gomes showed good shape in right time. She equalled her national indoor record from last years World Indoor Champs in Moskva with 676 cm and is so clearly going to defend her title in two weeks. It is second best european mark this season, but the leader Tatyana Lebedeva is not going to compete in Birmingham so Gomes is leading that order.

Other Indoor Action

CHELYABINSK (Rus, Feb 15): At Lukashevich Jumping Memorial Ivan Ukhov went over 234 cm and so confirmed his top position in High jump for the moment. Olympic champion Yelena Slesarenko who is not going to Birmingham won the women event 194 cm. The same height was achieved by second placed Yekaterina Savchenko. Viktor Chistyakov was the best in Pole vault with 570 cm.

SHEFFIELD (GBR): At Indoor City Challenge former champion Ashia Hansen was trying to get closer to european class in triple jump, but with 13.46 m she was not satisfied. Sarah Claxton registered good 8.13 at 60mHurdles. Rikki Fifton together with Somto Eruchie achieved the fastest 200 m times 21.28.

HOUSTON (USA): At Southland Conference the 60 m winner Ravyn Hayward got a solid 6.70 time.

Outdoor Activity

KINGSTON (JAM): Coach Steven Francis is continuing in his tough programme and again sent the fastest sprinters to run the 400 m. World record holder Asafa Powell bettered his best to 47.17. Fastest woman Sherone Simpson achieved even a new meet record and also a PB of 52.65. Their next races should be in April in relays at Mt.SAC and Penn.

AUSTIN (USA): Race Results Weekly is informing that Sunday´s Austin Marathon had African winners. Jynocel Basweti from Kenya was the best man 2:14:01 and Moges Zebenaye from Ethiopia the best female runner achieving 2:39:45.

NOBEOKA (JPN): Ken Nakamura reports that Nobeoka Marathon winner on Sunday was Shinji Tateishi with 2:15:48 hrs.

FERRARA (ITA): Slovenian media are saying that Helena Javornik won the Halfmarathon in Ferrara and achieving 1:10:57 what means new masters world record in category 40+. Men category was won by Kenyan Jackson Kirwa 1:01:34.

HAVANA (CUB): IAAF reports about good standard of throwing results during the local series of meets. Former hammer world champion Yipsi Moreno started the season with 72.01. Javelin Thrower Guillermo Martinez did 82.16 m. Female discus thrower Yania Ferrales achieved 61.26, last week she was even better achieving 63.66. Interesting duel in women´s Triple Jump – Yusmay Bicet got 14.19, second Yarianna Martinez 14.16 m.
