Stockholm Preview: Bekele wants another record

STOCKHOLM: One of the best indoor meets on the circuit the GE Galan in famous Globe Hall of Stockholm (site of Euro Indoors 1996) prepared for the fans for Tuesday evening some specialities. Logically the fans wants to see local heroes. Carolina Kluft will contest triathlon composed by 60mH, High Jump and 400 m as a warm-up before Birmingham. Both high jumps are also expected to be highlights. Stefan Holm after his great show in Banska Bystrica will again face world indoor champion Yaroslav Rybakov from Russia, but this time also Linus Thornblad will be mixing the cards. On the female side Kajsa Bergvist is hoping for her 50th 2m competition and again Croatian Blanka Vlasic is in the field. But in contrast to Banska Bystrica also European Champion Tia Hellebaut will compete who was ill in last days. Not to forget the olympic gold medallist Yelena Slesarenko from Russia. Christian Olsson is not having any tough opponents in his event and could attack own world lead. Finally fit again European Champion Susanna Kallur at 60m Hurdles and will have very good test before Birmingham running against top canadians Perdita Felicien and Priscilla Lopes. Internationally seen the top event is 3000 m with Kenenisa Bekele who said that he wants to attack the world record of Daniel Komen 7:24.90 (in no longer existing Budapest track 1998). His outdoor best is 7:30.67 so it looks like a very tough target, but his great world best from Birmingham shows that anything is possible. Kenyans are favourites of other running events – Wilfried Bungei at 800 m and Daniel Kipchirchir Komen at 1500 m (including Choge and Isaac Songok, so posibility for a fast time also exists). Carl Lewis becomes an agent

HOUSTON: Close sources in world of athletics confirmed that sprints/jumping legend Carl Lewis started to represent long jump olympic and world champion Dwight Phillips. The American changed also coaches, the famous Tom Tellez is now guiding his training. Lewis is so another major name who is started to work in the field of management of athletes after Michael Johnson or Gail Devers went the same road. As Johnson has former 400 m runner Deon Minor as member of the team the same will apply to Milton Mallard (200 m 20.38 in 1999) in connection to Carl Lewis. Mallard worked before for top US agent Paul Doyle.

Denby beats Carruthers

ALBUQUERQUE: New pro meet organsied by Vector Sports Management under the leadership of Charlie Wells brought some interesting marks. In the Albuquerque Convention Center David Payne won the 60m Hurdles in good 7.59 and confirmed he is with Ron Bramlett one of the favourites for national title during next weekend. The same goes for Nichole Denby who went for new PB of 7.97 and beat Danielle Carruthers who also dipped under 8 seconds. Lacey Janson bettered his best in Pole Vault to 460 cm.

Petrov about Isinbayeva

MOSKVA: Renowned coach Vitaliy Petrov explained his view to russian media about the latest performances of world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva: „I understand well what is happening. Everybody is expecting from her at every competition world record, if not, then it is considered as not good competition. But it is not so from my point of view. After Donyetsk she had lot of travelling, everybody was focused on her, she was tired from all the attention. She missed the energy and dynamics and some technical elements were also not at required level. She is jumping well, but I as a coach want always more and better. She still has last competition of indoor season on Friday in Paris and we know on what to work for the summer season.“ As Pole Vault for women will be for first time a Golden event in IAAF Golden League series it is expected that she will compete at all meetings with aim to get the part of the milion jackpot.

Saladino in Athens

ATHENS: Long jump world number one Irving Saladino from Panama is one of the main stars for Saturday´s IAAF Indoor Meet in Athens, Greece. He competed for first time in his career at indoor meeting on Saturday in Birmingham and got the world lead and South American indoor record with 831 cm. He was in Moscow’ last year, but that was championships (silver 829 cm). His next aim could be 840 cm a mark achieved only by 13 athletes ever indoors.

Gardener priorities

BIRMINGHAM: Eurosport.com is saying that Jason Gardener could miss his title defence at Euro Indoors because his wife Nancy is expecting their second baby around that time. He said that his priority would be to be at the birth.

Green Project by IAAF

OSAKA: IAAF presented a so called Green Project, the world athletics governing body´s first environmental programme during the summer World Championships in Japan. Project is supported by 2000 Olympic Marathon champion Naoko Takahashi, and 2004 Olympic Hammer Throw gold medallist Koji Murofushi, and the world renowned British singer Sarah Brightman, who is a Green Ambassador for the IAAF Green Project. It is hoped that this programme will contribute to a healthier earth, one that supports a future in which everyone can enjoy life’s many and varied activities such as the innate human actions of w alking, running, jumping and throwing which are encompassed by Athletics, the mother of all sports, says IAAF press release. The project should continue also at future editions of World Championships. The main area is called Green Management and includes: Reducing Environmental Impact; Energy Saving / Resource Consumption Control; Waste Production Control / Utilization of Recycled Materials; Ecological Measures regarding Transportation; Raising of Environmental Awareness.

Pavey moves to 10 k

LONDON: As David Martin reports Jo Pavey will step up to 10,000 metres on the track this summer and challenge for World Championship gold in Osaka. The 33-year-old Commonwealth 5,000m silver medallist is concentrating on her preparations for next month's European Indoor Championships where she will be a gold medal favourite. But two days after the championships finish at the National Indoor Arena, she will fly with her husband/goach, Gavin, to her warm-weather training base in South Africa and prepare for European 10 000 m Challenge in April in Italy.

Mulaudzi had flu, nothing else

JOHANNESBURG: World Class 800 m runner Mbulaeni Mulaudzi missed the Saturday´s local series meet in Oudtshoorn due to flu. Some reports said he did not competed because he did not want to travel by bus to the meet. His representation dismissed this reports.

Koch is 50

ROSTOCK: Believe or not but world record holder Marita Koch celebrated on Sunday her 50th birthday. Congratulations!

TEL AVIV (ISR): Last years world junior championships silver medallist Nikki Palli is in good shape before Birmingham. He jumped as tilastopaja says 225 cm. His best is 230 from last year.

TALLINN (EST): At Estonian multi-events championships Kaie Kand registered new national pentathlon record 4345 points. The former was held by Larisa Netseporuk 4319 back in 2002.

CLEMSON (USA): At Big South Conference Josh McDougal was able to run sub 8 minutes at 3000 m (7:58.27).

AKRON (USA): Tone Belt was the star at Big East Conference Meet as he won High Jump (221) and Long Jump (795). Irish runner Thomas Chamney won the 800 m (1:51.76), very good 1:01.54 also for Greg Gomes at 500 m (world leading time 2007). Elisabeth Slettum from Norway (studying at Louisiana University) was the best at 200 m with 23.93. Her national indoor record is 23.66 from 2004.

POCATELLO (USA): At traditional high school meet Simplot Games Bianca Knight confirmed her great potential. Aided by 1357 m altitude she achieved new US high school best 22.97. Allyson Felix was the holder of the previous mark 23.14 in 2003 in Boston. Jeneba Tarmoh was second setting also a good time 23.65. She was also able to beat Knight at 60 m (7.26-7.29). Best male sprinter was Trenton Guy jr. achieveing 6.78 at 60 m.
