Start list for multievents announced – headed by Kluft and Sebrle

LAUSANNE: EAA announced the startlist for multievents at European Indoor Championshisp. In both events nine athletes were invited according to their last year results, five according to this years results and one place was reserved for home nation. But for example in men category this was not used. There is also a special limitation that only two athletes per country can compete which is different to other events at championships (three per country). From last European indoor champs top two men are coming (Roman Sebrle from Czech Republic and Aleksander Pogorelov from Russia, he is also the lists leader) and top four women. Worlds number one Carolina Kluft from Sweden is leading the list followed by local hero Kelly Sotherton (silver in Madrid 2005) and Nataliya Dobrynska of Ukraine and Karin Ruckstuhl from Holland. Another favourite name is the High jump European Champion Tia Hellebaut from Belgium who is also leading the current lists with 4877 points. The Belgian athlete is still considering her options connected to High Jump. Womens competition has more quality as from Goteborg Top Ten seven athletes are scheduled to compete, whereas from men top ten only four. Even a attack at global mark is a posibility (4991 by Irina Belova, Russia, 1992 and second best by Kluft 4948 in 2005 in Madrid). Sebrle is expecting that his main rival as in Madrid will be Pogorelov, two years ago the olympic champion decided his gold only in last event.

Milz adresses also tougher measures against doping cheaters

LAUSANNE: EAA General Director Christian Milz in his „State of the Sport“ message touched also the fight against doping with following words:
„We at European Athletics, feel that the punishment and deterrents should be tougher in order to give the right messages to both the public and young impressionable athletes.
Rest assured, we hold a very strong line against doping in the sport and at next Thursday’s press conference in Birmingham, our President, Hansjörg Wirz, will provide further comments on his recent announcements that Europe is not willing to pay the bill for negative behaviour of non Europeans as well as a host of new, innovative measures, to protect the purity of our sport and punish those who continue to cheat.
I salute the organisers of the big track and field meetings in Europe by refusing to invite convicted doping cheats to their meetings and it is my belief that if an athlete finds themselves at the critical point of decision making regarding doping, and they stop think that their future earning potential and competition opportunities will be removed for life, they will come to the conclusion that the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages and decide against it.“
