Cantwell beats clearly Hoffa, Bramlett goes 7.47

BOSTON: First day of national championships saw the 3rd best triple jump mark of the season by Aarik Wilson 17.28 m (his indoor best). Male high jumpers produced a nice jump-off won by Tora Harris over Jesse Williams – both jumped 229 and went down in jump off to 223 where Harris was succesfull. Jeff Hartwig despite 39 years won the pole vault with 580 as the top boys are „down under“. At 3000 m Matt Tegenkamp and Jonathan Riley registered sub 7:50 times and walker Tim Seaman got his 10th consecutive title at 5000 m (19:24.38). On the women side Shalane Flanagan was able to run under 9 minutes and confirmed so her VISA Championships top position. Amy Acuff was the best high jumper (192) and Akiba McKinney best long jumper (655). Jillian Camarena won the shot put competition and as only achieved 18+ mark. Shayne Culpepper came back after giving birth to her second child with solid mile win (4:34:42).

During the second day World Indoor Champion 2004 Christian Cantwell won the shot put with first round effort 21.72. He also had 21.29 and 21.23 in series – enough for win. His main rival World Indoor Champion 2006 Reese Hoffa had a 21m toss only once in fith round 21.21. Dan Taylor was this time third 20.32 m. Alan Webb got the tactical mile title (4:01.07), also Nicholas Symmonds fulfilled the expectations at 800 m (1:48.73). The usual strong event 400 m was this time only mediocre – Greg Nixon got the title with 46.75. On the women side Lolo Jones won the 60 Hurdles title in very good 7.88 before Danielle Carruthers (7.92) and Nichole Denby (7.93). Gail Devers at the end of the day did not competed after beeing in Paris on Friday evening. Jenn Stuczynski as expected was the best in pole vault. Only two valid jumps were enough for title 450 and 460 in first attempts. Her main rival in Boston Lacy Janson had two tries at 440 and after she missed 465 the placings were decided. So Stuczynski tried for new US record 482 cm, unsucesfull but that remains at the agenda for summer.

Amber Campbell nearly got world best in Weight Throw, she achieved 24.54 - second best mark ever. Only 3 cm shy of Brittany Riley´s world best 24.57 from this january. World Champs 2005 finalist Dee Dee Trotter won the 400 m in solid 51.95. Men´s long jump was a close call for Trevell Quinley (806) followed by Brian Johnson (803) and triple winner Aarik Wilson (800). Two unheralded female sprinters were the best Hasani Roseby and Carmelita Jeter, both clocking bests and US seasonal leads 7.16 and 7.17. Ron Bramlett as first US hurdler got a sub 7.50 time this year while winning the men´s title in 7.47. David Payne was second 7.51, David Oliver 7.57 and Dexter Faulk 7.58 (new best) followed. DeBryan Blanton got the title in final event winning the 60 m in 6.56 and beat by 0.02 the world leader Marcus Brunson.

Holm and Thornblad over 238 - what a duel

GOTEBORG: Jump 238 in first try and be only second that happened only three times in indoor history of this event (Steve Smith,GBR in Wuppertal 1994, Gennadiy Avdeyenko,URS in Indianapolis 1987 and Carlo Thranhardt,FRG in Berlin 1987). The same thing was registered this Sunday during second day of Swedish Championships. Olympic Champion Stefan Holm was in great shape and since Banska Bystrica is only winning and his younger colleague Linus Thornblad is also in shape of his life. Both went over 218, 222 and 226 in first. Then at 230 the real battle started as Holm did it in first, but Thornblad in third. All was changed at 232 as Thornblad went over and Holm did not. He then mooved to 234 and made it. Thornblad was opposite after first unsucessfull try at 234 went to 236 and mastered it. Holm continued in great jumping and did also 236 in first. For many fantastic and enough, but it was not. Thornblad went even over 238 in first, his best. But Holm reacted in the same way and also made it. The hall then saw three tries by each at 240. It should be said that the surface is no as ideal at some high jump meets and this gives both results even more quality marks. The decision on count-back for the first place was because of Thornblads two misses at 230 at Holm´s side.

Hurdler Robert Kronberg is coming into shape in right time with 7.59 and Susanna Kallur had two sub 8 seconds times in heats and finals and will travel to Birmingham as the favourite.

BRATISLAVA: Fast men´s 800 m was the headline event during second day of Slovak national championships. Jozef Repcik won in 1:48,92 against Jozef Pelikan who followed him with 1:49.13. From the shot put duel was nothing. Milan Haborak got 19.69, but his rival and brother-in law Mikulas Konopka did not competed due to small wrist problem. But he should be ok for Birmingham.

Short round-up of other indoor action

ATHENS (GRE): At Athens Indoor IAAF Permit Ruth Beitia from Spain registered in first try new national record 201 in high jump and although Italian Antoinetta Di Martino did not come she was the star of the evening. European season best was achieved by Spaniard Sergio Gallardo at 1500 m 3:37.47, he finished fifth. Local hero Louis Tsatoumas had it easier than expected in long jump and won with 806 cm. His main rival and world number one Irving Saladino (Panama) watched from the stands and as Thomas Constas reports it was due to light tendonitis. Three european shot putters over 20 m is a nice warning for Birmingham. German Bjorn Otto had a good win at 570 in Pole Vault while Russians Chistyakov and Pavlov no heighted. Their countrymate Alexandra Antonova clocked a new best at 60mHurdles 7.93 – also new stadium record. Ekaterini Thanou won the 60m in 7.24 and confirmed her trip to Birmingham. She had a bad start (only 0.178 reaction), but great finish. Poland hopes for 4x400 in Birmingham got bad news as their leader Daniel Dabrowski did not finished his race due to injury and is now under questionmark for the championships. Winner Chris Lloyd did new national record for Dominica 46.28.

PARIS (FRA): At U23 National Indoor Championships Samuel Coco-Viloin registered new best at 60mHurdles with 7.72 and is the name to be added to Birmingham roster. Martial Mbandjock won the 60 m in good 6.72 and Michael Diaz after jumping 224 tried for 228 cm.

MAGGLINGEN (SUI): Long jumper Julien Fivaz as last made the team for Birmingham as he achieved 795 cm in his event.

LONDON (GBR): Heptathlon winner during the Indoor Multievents match (GBR-FRA-ESP) Franck Logel from the French team achieved new U23 national record with a total score of 5816 points.

SONDERSHAUSEN (GER): Nadine Kleinert won at this competition with world lead of 19.29 m. European champion Ralf Bartels was the best man achieving 19.70. What is interesting? Yes, this special shot put meet is held some 700 m under the ground – in miner shaft.

ZAGREB (CRO): At City Championships Slovenian athlete Nina Kovacic won the 60 m in 7.41 and achieved that result already for the third time during this year. As she is missing the standard for Birmingham only by 0.01 she got the selection. That means that Slovenia will be represented by 3 women sprinters – Merlene Ottey, Pia Tajnikar and now Kovacic. Blanka Vlasic has to see for future – croatian junior Marusa Novak jumped 181 cm.

CLEMSON (USA): At Atlantic Coast Conference Jacoby Ford registered very fast 6.53 in 60 m heats. Only two men were this season faster so far.

LEXINGTON (USA): SEC Conference brough usual fast times already in the heats, but it should be said that aided by 291 m long track. For example Kerron Stewart from Jamaica achieved the fastest time of the season at 200 m 22.78. Calvin Smith clocked 46.05 at 400 m (what a familiar name in world of sprints) and Rubin Williams 20.72 at 200 m. Bahamian Donald Thomas won HJ 224. Slovakia has a fifth 19 m shot putter as Daniel Vanek (Georgia University) achieved 19.31 m, he was second.

AMES (USA): At BIG 12 Conference decathlete Trey Hardee equalled in heats his hurdles best 7.76 and send so a warning for summer.

Road and CC round-up

SAN JUAN (PUR): World record holder Meseret Defar (ETH) did not clocked 10 km road world record (30:21 Paula Radcliffe in San Juan 2003) on Sunday, but she was not even a winner. Her time 32:08 was enough for second place. The win went to Lornah Kiplagat representing Netherlands with a final time of 31:05. She succesfully defended her title from last year and won here also in 2004. Gilbert Okari from Kenya won the men race with 28.08.

NAIROBI (KEN): Highly dramatic Kenyan Trials for Mombasa had surprise winners in Moses Mosop and Florence Kiplagat in senior categories. Eliud Kipchoge did not finished as he collapsed during the race. Some agencies are reporting that he was despite this included into the team for World Championships. But many of the track big names looks like to stay out this time (for example Kogo, Masai, Muchiri, Mathathi, Songok, Choge, Ochichi, Kimwei, Masai).

ADDIS ABABA (ETH): As IAAF reports Tadesse Tola was the surprise winner of the World Champs trials as he was able to beat such a big names as Sileshi Sihine or Tariku Bekele.
