News Around European Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM/LAUSANNE: EAA is informing that after closing the entries for European Indoor Championships in total 315 men and 272 women from 45 countries are scheduled to compete there. From last European undercover Championships 2005 in Madrid in total 13 individual winners are entered (out of 24). Seven men (Gardener, Gillick, Cragg, Holm, Pavlov, Olsen, Sebrle) and Six women (Gevaert, Chojecka, Kallur, Chicherova, Gomes, Kluft). From last years Goteborg European Championships in total 9 individual winners are scheduled to compete. Four men (Espaňa, Olijar, Howe, Sebrle) and 5 women (Gevaert, Dominguez, Kallur, Hellebaut, Kluft). In the men events the highest figure is as expected at 60 m with 32 entries, the lowest running is 800 m (22). In technical the biggest number is 25 in High Jump and Long Jump and the lowest 19 in pole vault. In the female section the overall biggest entry is at 60 m with 36 names, the lowest running 3000 m with 14 entrants. In technical 13 is the lowest for triple jump and shot put. Athletes were invited for multievents (15 per heptathlon and pentathlon) and relay (6 men and 6 women teams). In this entries still some countries have in some events four allowed entries per event. That means that the overall figure will be at the end of the day lower. Technical delegates will have some issues to solve, mainly concerning heats at 3000 m for women (looks like to be cancelled) or semifinals for 800 m men or 400 m women. In technical events the finals should be composed of 8 athletes.

GOTEBORG (SWE): World champion Kajsa Berqvist decided to pass European Indoors in Birmingham. She said that she is missing the right shape to fight the best ones and wants to prepare for better in summer.

BRUSSELS (BEL): European champion Tia Hellebaut announced her decision to compete in Birmingham only in High Jump. That means she will pass her second alternative the pentathlon.

WARSZAWA (POL): The Team of Poland will travel to Birmingham without their best 400 m runner Daniel Dabrowski because of his hamstring injury which he got during the race in Athens on Saturday.

WACO (USA): Last years global female athlete number one Sanya Richards revealed for IAAF in her diaries that she will start the 400 m season at Michael Johnson Invitational in Waco on April 21. Week before she wants to run a 200 m in Arlington.

EUGENE (USA): Race Results Weekly reports that The Subway Eugene Marathon has announced Nike as the official running shoe and elite athlete sponsor for the inaugural marathon on Sunday, April 29. Nike is offering prize money for the top three men and women in the marathon plus modest bonuses ($750 / $500) for any runner who achieves the Olympic Marathon Trials "A" (2:20 / 2:39) or "B" (2:22 / 2:47) standard.

DUSSELDORF: Gustav Schwenk reports that European champion Jan Fitschen after he closed his indoor campaign went to training camp in Flagstaff, USA.
He wants to try to achieve the IAAF Standard for Osaka early June at a meet in Kassel at 5000 m distance. In Germany in all running events the IAAF A Standard will be necessary to qualify for Osaka. Only at 10 000 m the B mark will be enough.The candidate for that is Andre Pollmächer who will have his training base in Mexico.

MINSK (BLR): Only now it is known that world champion Nadezhda Ostapchuk achieved in the Shot Put already on Feb 17 a world lead 19.89 m. She is not competing in Birmingham.

SAO PAULO (BRA): Also the Brasilian season is starting slowly. As Athletics International reports Jesse de Lima achieved in High jump good 224 cm. Panamerican Games on home soil are for the Brasilian Athletes this year one of the biggest motivations.

MEXICO CITY (MEX): IAAF reports that former world champion Ana Guevara started her season with solid 51.01 at 400 m.

FEZ (MOR): Winners of Morrocan Cross Country Championships as per Race Results Weekly – men 12 km: 1. Anis Selmouni 36:49,01, wom 8 km: 1. Bouchra Chaabi 28:04.45

BUDAPEST (HUN): At Hungarian Winter Throwing Championships the best result was produced by Krisztian Pars in Hammer throw. Sixth from Goteborg managed to register 76.32 m.

LAUSANNE (SUI): Hansjorg Wirz will have no opposition in his bid to continue as EAA President. Munich Olympic Games 1972 hero Valeriy Borzov is not standing against him, only a mistake in the paper work of Ukrainian federation was responsible for his would-be bid for president. As EAA is informing Borzov wants to bid for council membership, but as it is now after the deadline Wirz himself will ask the delegates of the Congress to allow him to candidate for that post. The EAA Congress is planned for Apr 14 in Cannes.
