Ottey continues into summer

LJUBLJANA (SLO): Supervet sprinter Merlene Ottey confirmed that she will continue to run. „I need to achieve 11.30 in order to qualify for Osaka. I will try for that. My appearance in Birmingham was very short, but I still feel I can be there and compete,“ she said. In Birmingham (her first ever European Indoors) she achieved high quality 7.33 in the 60 m heats, only once in the season she was quicker (7.30 in heats of Leipzig Meet). With the aimed time of 11.30 she would better her own world masters record in category 45+ which is currently 11.34 from last year in Glasgow (Aug 12). She also holds the best in this category at 200 m with 23.82 last August in Banska Bystrica (Slovakia). If succesfull Osaka would be her 8th outdoor World Championships. With that she would tie the record 8 appearances achieved so far by 8 women – Laverne Eve (BAH, javelin), Yelena Nikolayeva (RUS, walk), Franka Dietzsch (GER, discus), Jackie Edwards (BAH, long jump), Susana Feitor (POR, walk), Fiona May (ITA, long jump), Beverly McDonald (JAM, sprints) and Maria Mutola (MOZ, 800 m). On the male side there are three personalities with 8 appearances – Jan Zelezny (CZE, javelin), Tim Berrett (CAN, walk) and Lars Riedel (GER, discus).
