Isinbayeva and Borzakovskiy for Moscow 2011

MOSCOW: Top world class athletes pole vault queen Yelena Isinbayeva and 800 m olympic winner Yuriy Borzakovskiy are supporting Moscow bid to stage 2011 IAAF World Championships. They both should appear also in Mombasa during the presentation of the plans before IAAF council members as president of national federation Valentin Balakhnichev confirmed. Other bidding cities are Daegu, Korea and Brisbane, Australia. Moscow is also bidding for 2013 edition along with this cities and Barcelona, Spain. „Our priority is 2011,“ said Balakhnichev.

Romania without president


BUCURESTI: One of the worst European Indoors for Romania in Birmingham (no medal) had its consequences. Former long distance runner Ilie Floroiu stepped down as president of national federation. Discussions are beeing held this days about the next steps. Well informed sources told EME News that interim president could be former hurdler Gheorghe Boroi with help from another great former athlete high jumper Sorin Matei. They should run the daily agenda and also prepare the elections for autumn after World Championships in Osaka. Other candidates could be former great world class runners Violetta Szekely and Gabriela Szabo.

Stockholm goes youth

STOCKHOLM: One of the best meets DN Galan of Stockholm is expanding its programme this year with new activity. DN.Galan Youth will be held right after the classical meet (Aug 7) on Aug 8 and 9. Categories fom 12 till 19 years old athletes will compete in same environment of Olympic Stadium with music, announcers etc.

Czapiewski is trying

WARSZAWA: Polands www.sports.pl is informing that former European Indoor Champion 2002 at 800 m Pawel Czapiewski sold all what he owned in order to get funds for his preparations for summer season. After injuries in last years he was deleted from the list of supported athletes by his national federation. But he remains in good mood and wants to be back on top this summer and compete in Osaka and Beijing. He belongs to group of coach Zbigniew Krol in Krakow where also the double gold medallist from Birmingham Lidia Chojecka belongs.

Konovalov banned

MOSCOW: Russian media are reporting about positive doping case of hammer thrower Ilya Konovalov. He had positive out of competition test on Dec 14, last year and so will be not able to compete until December 2008. That was confirmed by Russian federation head-coach Valeriy Kulichenko. The explanation for having banned substances in his body is that he took mistakenly a medicine of his son. He is 35 years old with best 82.28 from 2003. His biggest success is bronze from Edmonton World Championships 2001. At Helsinki World Champs 2005 he was sixth. He also was third last year at World Cup in Athens. He did not missed last three Olympic Games in Atlanta (6), Sydney (5) and Athens (dnq).

Walkings series to start

NAUCALPAN: In Mexico the IAAF Race Walking Challenge is starting over the weekend. Men will compete at 20 km and 50 km, women at 20 km. The series is upgraded this year to 6 meetings, World Champs in Osaka and challenge final in Saransk, Russia end of September. Awards waiting for final standings are totalling to 202 000 USD, additionally each meet is offering total prize money 7500 USD and also it should be noted that the best walkers will get 150 000 USD in Osaka for top 8 placings. That is the richest season so far for walking ever. Best four placings are scoring into overall order. As IAAF informs the start lists are of high quality. Last year challenge winner Claudia Stef from Romania is competing against Susana Feitor (POR), Kjersti Platzer (NOR) and Jane Saville (AUS). Local mexican walkers and chinese representatives are favourites for men races. Russian Nikolay Matyukhin is added for 50 km. IAAF also says that Jesus Angel Garcia the former world champion from Spain is scheduled to compete. If yes, that would be very demanding programme of him as he last weekend won the national 50 km championships.

Hopes for fast half-marathon

PRAHA: The Prague „Hervis Half-marathon“ scheduled for March 24 announced a world record attempt. At new course which should be quicker and smoother. Candidates to break the mark 58:53 by Samuel Wanjiru (KEN) from this February should be his countrymates Patrick Ivuti, Stephen Kibiwott, William Rotich, Enock Mitei and John Korir. Also in the field Phaustin Baha and Martin Sulle from Tansania. Halfmarathon second race of the career is announced also for former track world champion Ismael Kirui (1993 and 1995 at 5000 m), who achieved last year in Breda 1:05:46. On the women side the top two entries are Kenyan Caroline Kwambai and Russian Liliya Shobukhova (former indoor 3000 m world record holder until this year) who is to debut at the distance as says the press release of the organisers.

Junior win in HJ men, Steffensen out

BRISBANE (AUS): First day of 85th national championships brought a sensational high jump win by 18-years old Liam Zamel-Paez who bettered his best to 221 cm. He was finalist last year at world juniors in Beijing. Strong wind did not allowed new best for Alwyn Jones in triple jump. His winning mark 16.80 was aided by +3.8 m/s. His best so remains 16.79 from last year. Peter Nowill won the steeple as expected in 8:34.95 (Martin Dent was second and Youcef Abdi dnf) and Laura Fleshman from USA was the best at women´s 3000 m (9:28.53) ahead of former star Sonia O´Sullivan (9:32.31). Patrick Johnson was the fastest in 100 m heats (10.30) and Japanese Hiroaki Doi won the hammer (69.89). One of the stars quarter-miler John Steffensen will not compete due to hamstring injury. Interestingly he is represented by HSI management group from USA where stars like Maurice Greene or Allen Johnson are belonging. Champs which are also selection trials for Osaka will continue until Sunday.
