Wins for Plätzer and O. Segura

NAUCALPAN (Mar 10, MEX): First leg of IAAF Race Walking Challenge started with 20 km races. 35years old olympic silver medallist from 2000 Kjersti Plätzer from Norway won the women event in 1:32:30. „I felt well, fortunately there was no rain, I enjoyed the last km,“ she said afterwards. Her next plan is to compete in April in Rio Maior, Portugal which will be the third leg of series. Elena Ginko from Belarus was second only some 5 seconds before Jane Saville of Australia. Susana Feitor from Portugal and last year challenge winner Claudia Stef from Romania were at next places as they both made the pace during the first half of the race (10 km 46:30).

Men´s 20 km ended with local success. Top three by Mexicans Omar Segura (25 years, 18th at Olympic Games 2004, coached by Olympic winner 1984 Raul Gonzalez) before Cristian Berdeja and Eder Sanchez. Winning time 1:23:20 hrs. Best European walker between 44 starters was the Slovak Matej Toth who finished 8th with 1:28:26. „I must be satisfied, we just came from high altitude training camp here in Mexico. The times are according to the altitude and temperature we competed,“ said Toth who was 6th last year at European Championships in Goteborg. He is the first Slovak walker who was able to score points in the challenge. Men started later then women and had more difficult conditions concerning the sun. On Sunday the first leg of challenge will be closed with men´ s 50 km race. The event is staged at altitude over 2000 m.

OHRDRUF (GER): German CC championships were staged on Saturday in good weather and some 1200 runners competed as www.leichtathletik.de reports. Stephan Hohl won the main men race at 9,8 km with 28:53 min and got his first CC national title. Sabrina Mockenhaput won clearly women´s 5,3 km race in 17:21. Men´s short course was dominated by Wolfram Muller (11:20 at 3,8 km). Marathon European Champion Ulrike Maisch was the late withdrawal.

JACKSONVILLE (USA): Deena Kastor won her fifth River Run in Jacksonville at 15 km, the race was also US National Championships at this distance. Her time 47:20 was just 5 seconds behind her US record (47:15 in 2003). Second place went to Jen Rhines (48:58). Meb Keflezighi got his record sixth title in 43:40, US halfmarathon record holder Ryan Hall was good second in 44:01. While Keflezighi is in preparation for London Marathon (as is Hall), Kastor´s goal is to compete well in Boston. She also won as first women the challenge against men as she was ahead at finish line before Keflezighi after she got 5 minutes advantage at start. „Catch us if you can,“ she said on her website before the race. They did not.

TOYOTA (JPN): Mexican media are reporting that Giovanni Lanaro (MEX) won the international indoor pole vault competition in Toyota, JPN bettering the meet record to 562 cm. His CAC indoor record from last year is 571 cm. He tried to be better, but was not succesfull at 580 cm.

SHEFFIELD (GBR): At British Universities Indoor Championships Simeon Williamson won the 60 m in 6.71 and European finalist (dq) Ryan Scott finished second in 6.73. Silver medallist Craig Pickering was also scheduled to compete, but withdrew as ukathletics.net informs.

TAMPA (USA): Linnie Yarbrough confirmed great early shape at high hurdles winning the 110m race at South Florida Invitational clocking 13.34 (+0.1, last weekend 13.33). Ernest Wiggins also confirmed fast time from last weekend achieving 10.34 (+1.8). Only Nicole Whitman was not able to confirm her extraordinary 11.12 from Orlando as she sped to 11.84 and 24.25 double.
