Omar Zepeda wins 50k

NAUCALPAN (MEX, Mar 11): The 50 km race during Second day of first leg of IAAF Race Walking challenge in Mexico was dominated by home competitors. At high altitude only 19 walkers took part in difficult conditions. Omar Zepeda (29 years, 6th from Helsinki World Championships) as only one was able to achieve a sub 4 hours time. Best European was the Swede Fredrik Svensson (12th in Goteborg 50k) finishing at 6th place. From the beginning Mexicans were leading the race, in second pack the international participation from China, Sweden and Belarus. Until 35th km four Mexicans were responsible for the pace (Zepeda, Sanchez, Vargas, Segura-1996 Olympics bronze medal winner), first to leave was Segura. After 40th km top three started to speed up a little bit, but they all went on their own. First was at that time Sanchez, behind him Zepeda. Vargas had a crisis. At approximately 4km before the end Zepeda turned the things and went into the lead and came first. But he was not very sure as he had since 20th km two red cards already. Sanchez was clear second and Flores tried to come to Vargas and attack his third position. For future the walkers involved proposed to move the race into lower altitude, this time it was at over 2000 m (informations provided by Slovak walker Matej Toth who is studying journalism and competed himself on Saturday). Attacking the fifth place was Andrey Stepanchuk from BLR but he got apparently a dq at the finish.
