Wanjiru second World Record of the year

DEN HAAG (NED, Mar 17): Only 20 years old Samuel Wanjiru from Kenya bettered for second time this year the half-marathon world record. At 33rd City-Pier-City race he finished in 58:35 and was quicker than on Feb 9 in Dubai (58:53) by 18 seconds. For the record he will get a bonus of 25 000 USD. Other Kenyans fighted for next places – Solomon Bushendich (1:00:13) and Francis Kiprop (1:00:17). Women´s race was won by another Kenyan Hilda Kibet in new personal best 1:09:40. She is aiming for Dutch citizenship. Wanjiru in his solo race had 20 km split as reported by atletiek.nl 55:31 and that is better than current WR of Haile Gebrselassie (55:48 in Phoenix, January 2006). In total it is the third HM WR for Wanjiru as he achieved 59:16 in September,2005 in Rotterdam. That time is still world junior best at the distance. In that year he also ran world junior track record at 10 000 m achieving 26:41.75 at Van Damme Memorial in Brussels. It was his sixth HM of the career, four times he was the winner and five times was able to dip under one hour.

Nerius, Lammert, Kozmus and Kanter wins in Yalta

YALTA (UKR, Mar 17): First day of 7th European Cup Winter Throwing brought two golds for Germany. Expected javelin win by European Champion Steffi Nerius achieving 63.14 in fifth round. Only one next over 60 metres was Goldie Sayers from GBR (60.02). Bronze went to Italy´s Zahra Bani (58.95). For Nerius already the third win after 2003 and 2005.

Bronze medallist Shot putter from Goteborg Petra Lammert won her event achieving 18.67 m and backing the leading position by 18.35 and 18.54. European Indoor champion Assunta Legnante was second (18.31) and her country-mate Chiara Rosa third (18.14). Birmingham silver medallist Irina Khudoroshkina from Russia only fifth (17.72).

Sensational win for Primoz Kozmus of Slovenia in men hammer with 77.99 (he had also 77.95 to back his position). World and European Champion Ivan Tikhon from Belarus was second (77.79) and Turkish record holder Esref Apak third (76.68). Another favourite and 80 m thrower Krisztian Pars of Hungary was fourth (75.79). „I expected such a result according to my preparation. This is a good sign before the summer season,“ Kozmus was quoted by siol.net.

Estonian Gerd Kanter achieved already his fourth win at the event in discus, this time with 65.43 from third round. Title defender Piotr Malachowski from Poland tried, and his last round effort was the closest 65.06. Bronze went for only national record of the day Erucment Olgundeniz from Turkey (64.34).

The U23 javelin was dominated by Russian Mariya Abakumova (59.42). Second placed Sinta Ozolina from Latvia is still a junior (55.03). Other U23 winners were Russians Andrey Azarenkov in Hammer (72.41) and Anna Avdeyeva in Shot Put (17.32). Local win for U23 male discus by Dmytro Isnyuk (58.23 m). U23 competitions are held on project basis. Record number 203 athletes from 26 countries is competing.

Vries beats Nagel

DURBAN (RSA, Mar 18): Heat and strong wind affected the performances during second day of National Championships. Sherwin Vries achieved his second national sprint double after 2003 and won the 100 m in 10.54 by milimeters against Christiaan Krone and beat clearly more experienced Morne Nagel at 200 m with 20.79. Both times against strong wind. World number one ranked 800 m runner Mbulaeni Mulaudzi confirmed his status with solid win 1:46.09. Alwyn Myburgh finally got his 400 m H national title with first sub 49 seconds time of the year (48.97). Very good also 8:28.93 steeple time by Ruben Ramolefi. World javelin junior champion Robert Oosthuizen confirmed his excellent shape with anothet 80m+ throw. Disabled Oscar Pistorius was able to achieve unbelievable 46.56 at 400 m and earned silved medal. Only Jan van der Merwe was better with 46.31 but... Top 400 hurdler Louis Van Zyl did not make it to the finals with 47.35 in heats. On the women side Geraldine Pillay (coached by Stephen Francis) got the expected double but winds were against any fast times (11.59 and 23.45). Agnes Samaria ran very good 2:02.70 at 800 m and African record holder Elizna Naude got the expected discus win (61.00 m).

LAS VEGAS (USA, UNLV Duel): Solid sprints by Carol Rodriguez of Puerto Rico clocking 11.39 (+0.5) and 23.06 (0.0). Destinee Hoker achieved 190 in high jump.

TEMPE (USA, Castillo Invitational): Good 200 m race (0.0) won by Kelvin Love in 20.73 (his best 20.65 in 2005) and second Greg Nixon the indoor US Champion at 400 m 2007 achieved new best 20.81.

NORTHRIDGE (USA, Northridge Invitational): Excellent early shape by 4th placer from Athens Olympic Games at 400mH Sheena Johnson. She won the 100mH in 12.98 (+1.1) and confirmed that fast times could be expected in her main event. Only three times in her career she was faster (all three back in 2004 from her last NCAA year).

HOUSTON (USA, Tom Tellez Invitational): Jamaican sprinter Yhann Plummer (best of 10.21) clocked wind-aided 10.34 (+2.8). Solid High jump by Marcus Harris and Will Littleton as both went over 221 cm.

SAN ANTONIO (USA, UTSA Relays): Talented Rynell Parson (16 years) is again faster. After PB (10.40) in heats he won the finals of 100 m in HS section with another best of 10.32. As local media are reporting he is virtually unbeaten at 100 m in his category and age. „I'm just trying to get my time down. I´m starting to get into shape, so I am pretty pleased,“ he was quoted. He could be the main title contender for the World U17 Championships in Ostrava later in July.

WANGANUI (NZL, Mayoral Mile): British runner Andy Baddeley won the traditional mile race in 3:58.81. Second placed Garett Hyeth from home country achieved 50th jubilee sub 4 minutes time in the history of the race (3:59.90). Before 45 years Peter Snell achieved the first (3:54.4). Ireland´s Aoifa Byrne was the best woman (4:49.33).

KERZERS (SUI, 15 km road): The first race of Swiss series Post Cup had the best local runner Viktor Rothlin (in preparation for Zurich Marathon on April 1) on 6th place in solid 45:03. Wins were achieved by Kenyan Stanley Salil (43:25) and Hungarian Aniko Kalovics (49:44 – course record).

VELENJE (SLO): World indoor record holder at 800 m Jolanda Ceplak won national cross country title at the distance 5,3 km achieving time of 18:48.
