Chelimo Kemboi sensational winner of Roma Marathon, new female course record

ROME (Mar 18): Unheralded Chelimo Kemboi from Kenya won surprisingly the 13th Rome Marathon in new personal best 2:09:36. His previous was only 2:13:40 from 2005 Nairobi race as per Tilastopaja. Spanish European champion 2002 at 10 000 m Jose Manuel Martinez was second (2:10:12) and Jonathan Kosgei from Kenya third (2:10:25). Twenty runners went under 2:20. Richard Limo was responsible for the pace and reached the half in 1:04:11. It was 7th best winning time and 7th Kenyan male win in this marathon.

Souad Ait Salem was the best woman in new course and national record 2:25:08. Previous event best from last year was bettered by 36 second (2:25:44 by Tatyana Hladyr from Ukraine). Algerian 28-years old runner is the national record holder also at track distances 3000, 5000 and 10 000 m. She is the winner of African Champs and Pan Arab Games from past years. Second place went to Kenyan Hellen Kimutai (2:26:46) and third to Slovenian veteran Helena Javornik (2:28:53). Morrocan elite runner and track record holder at 10 000 m Asmae Leghzaoui debuted with 2:52:51 at 14th place. In total 21 runners clocked sub 3 hours. More than 15 000 runners participated.

Robert Kipchumba beats them all

LISBON (Mar 18): Last years world road race championships silver medallist and former world junior champion Robert Kipchumba from Kenya won the 17th Lisbon Half-Marathon in 1:00:31. His country-mate Robert Cheruiyot who achieved his fifth podium place was second 1:00:36 and double marathon world champion Jaouad Gharib (MAR) got finally into the top three with 1:00:41. Last New York marathon winner Marilson dos Santos (BRA) was close fourth 1:00:42. Berlin HM winner Paul Kosgei was 7th (1:01:24). Women title defender Selina Kosgei (KEN) was third in 1:09:47. Two other Kenyans were faster. Boston 2006 winner Rita Jeptoo (1:07:05) and Susan Chepkemei (1:08:33, won here three times before). Best Europeans were home runners Luis Jesus (12th 1:03:36) and Ana Dias 4th 1:10:40). The race has a 69 m downhill and statisticians are not clear about including the times into the main lists. Jeptoo´s time is anyway the fastest in 2007. In total 36 000 runners participated.

Montebrun beats Lysenko

YALTA (Mar 18): In total 4 world leads (women: 66.14 Dietzsch and 63.14 Nerius, men: 65.43 Kanter and 77.90 Kozmus) and one event record (66.14 Dietzsch) were the summary of the throwing weekend at Black Sea.

French record holder Manuela Montebrun registered a rare win over European champion and world record holder Tatyana Lysenko (RUS) in hammer competition during second day of 7th Winter Throwing European Cup. She achieved in second round 72.65 and in last as a clear winner again 72.55. Lysenko had her best also in second (72.05) and in last two rounds trying registered fouls. It was 30th jubilee competition for the Russian over 70 metres. Sensational best for 30 years old Russian javelin thrower Igor Sukhomlinov who registered in first round 83.34 and in second 81.37 m. His previous best was 80.39 m. He was unexpected winner also for the organiser as he was throwing in weaker B-group. The stronger one was won by Magnus Arvidsson of Sweden (76.27), who was overall second. Third place goes to Latvian Ainars Kovals (74.64). Event record holder Christian Nicolay from Germany was only 11th (67.91).

World Champion Franka Dietzsch of Germany confirmed her status and won the discus with world leading 66.14. It was also new event record. Silver goes surprisingly to Melina Robert-Michon of France (63.48) and bronze to Ukrainian World Student Games 2003 winner Nataliya Semenova (60.51) just 21 cm ahead of more experienced country-mate Olena Antonova (60.30). Former event record holder Nicoleta Grasu (ROM) was distant 7th (57.59).

In men shot put the 20 metres did not happened. But for the joy of the home spectators olympic champion 2004 Yuriy Bilonog from Ukraine was the winner registering 19.95. Next places went to Belarussians – Birmingham silver medallist Pavel Lyzhyn (19.86) and Dmitri Goncharuk who was best in the B-group (19.42). Fourth place went to other home putter Andriy Semenov who after disastrous Birmingham (only 18.41 in qualification) bettered his best to 19.37.

Team honors went to Russian men and German women, as Russian women had very poor discus for example.

In U23 competitions world juniors silver medallist 2006 Roman Avramenko from host country won the javelin with 73.96 (he is still a junior). Mariya Smalyachkova from Belarus was the best in hammer (66.78) and second place went to 16years old Romanian Bianca Perie with excellent 66.00 m. She is world junior champion from last year and main favourite for World U17 Champs in July in Ostrava. Nadine Muller from Germany won the discus in good 60.35 m and Serbian Luka Rujevic the male shot achieving 19.45. Overall U23 titles went to men and women of Russia (results of 4 competitors per 4 events are calculated together per IAAF scoring tables).

MILANO (ITA, Mar 17): Italian 50 km walk record holder Alex Schwazer won the Clubs Championships 20 km with 1:23:21, second place goes to Lorenzo Civallero (1:24:27). Olympic 20 km champion and fresh father Ivano Brugnetti tested his speed and clocked 10 km intermediate time 39:00, he than did not continued as he is in preparation for the chinese leg of IAAF Race Walking Challenge. Goteborg bronze medallist Elisa Rigaudo won the 10 km female race (44:44). Best junior Matteo Giupponi clocked 41:34.

SEOUL (KOR, Mar 18): Local hero and olympic silver medallist from 1996 Lee Bong-Ju (36 years old) won the Seoul Marathon with 2:08:04. Since 2004 it was for first time he went under 2:10, it is also so far the fastest time of the year. Rest of the places at the podium went to Kenyans – Paul Kiprop Kirui (2:08:29) and Laban Kipkemboi (2:08:38, bettered his best by 1 second – 2:08:39 in New York 2002). Women race was dominated by Chinese Wei Yanan clocking 2:23:12, also a world lead 2007. She returned in 2006 after two years of doping ban. Agencies are reporting that Lee earned 80 000 USD for win and another 10 000 USD as result bonus.

KUALA LUMPUR (MAS, Mar 18): The 16th Kuala Lumpur International Marathon registered 8182 runners from 49 countries and Kenyan domination. Cyprian Kiogara won the race in 2:17:38, which was more than three minutes faster than previous course record. Another Kenyan Abraham Ondati was second in his debut 2:17:57. Race was starting already at 4:30 am. Winfridah Kwamboka from Kenya won the women competition in 2:48:09, but due to stomach problems as IAAF reports was not able to better the course record (2:46:37).

NEW YORK (USA, Mar 18): Due to snow the US road 8 km champs were postponed by one day. 28 years old World Student Games steeple winner 2001 Anthony Famiglietti (best 8:17.91 in 2004) won six seconds ahead of Abdi Abdirahman (22:35-22:41). Third place goes to Bolota Asmerom (22:48). As Race Results Weekly reports he got 11 000 USD including bonuses.

WINDEN (AUT, Mar 18): National CC titles went clearly to favourites: Gunther Weidlinger (9,5 km), Martin Proll (3,2 km) and Andrea Mayr on women side (5,3 km).
