Shaheen concentraces on track, Abeylegesse comes

MOMBASA: Steeple world record holder and possible oponnent for Kenyan and Ethiopean teams for this weeks World CC Champs Saif Saeed Shaheen of Qatar will not compete at the event. His agent Ricky Simms confirmed: „He is back in full training after missing the Asian Games in December with an Achilles injury but prefers to concentrate on the summer track season.“ It is not clear yet when he will start the track racing.

In the meantime former track world champion Eliud Kipchoge returned to Kenyan team camp, but will act as reserve. His fitness after malaria is not yet at competitive level. Respected coach Colm O´Connell said for Kenyan media that if proper planning Kenenisa Bekele can be beaten.

South Africa is sending three full teams, only women senior race will have individual runners from the country. Austria is sending recent CC champion and steeple specialist Gunther Weidlinger.

Interesting entry for women race is former 5000 m world record holder Elvan Abeylegesse from Turkey. It will be debut at the World CC for her. After that she will try to defend her European Cup 10 000 m win from last year in Antalya in April in Ferrara, Italy. Informed sources are saying she is in good shape. Mombasa will be her first race after beeing third at European Championships 5000 m in Goteborg. She will be accompanied by Binnaz Uslu, the U23 European Champion 2005 at 5000 m.

Powell in Walnut and Philadelphia

KINGSTON: MVP sprint teams will run relays end of April in USA. Coach Stephen Francis will send his best speedsters including world fastest Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson to test their abilities at MtSAC Relays in Walnut and Penn Relays in Philadelphia.

Australian named 40 athletes for Osaka

SYDNEY: Athletics Australia named in first wave of selections 40 athletes for summer World Championships in Osaka, Japan. All important names from the down under summer circuit are included. Also in the team is Jana Rawlinson (formerly Pittman) the 400 mH 2003 World Champion who is returning after injury. Not only her but also steeplechaser Victoria Mitchell, shotputter Scott Martin and 400 m runner John Steffensen did not competed at the Trials this month. They got the green light, but must proof their shape later. Also named are both men relays 4x100 m and 4x400 m, women still must confirm the level. Other names are to be included during the European summer season.

BERLIN (GER): Organisers of Berlin Vattenfall HM announced more names for April 1 race. Second and third placed Kenyans from last year Evans Cheruiyot and Wilfred Taragon are returning. Francis Kibiwott, fourth from February Dubai WR race (PB 1:00:08) will also come along with Swiss 10 000 m track record holder Christian Belz who will have his debut at the distance. Female headline is the duel between Edith Masai (KEN) and Benita Johnson (AUS).

EUGENE: Oregon Preview meet registered 225 cm by high jumper Eugene Hutchinson, only 1 cm shy of his best. World junior champs 2006 bronze medallist Rebekah Noble won the women 800 m in 2:04.74.

CHARLOTTE: Hurdler Anwar Moore clocked 13.50 at 49er Classic, but was aided by +2.4 m/s.

LONG BEACH: New best by Brent Gray at 100 m 10.29 (+0.4).

TUCSON: Excellent new best for Garologwane Masheto from Botswana at Willie Williams Classic 45.41 at 400 m. The African Champs relay bronze medallist made headlines indoors with Big 10 win with very fast 600 m (1:16.28). In throws Sean Shields achieved 19.80 in shot and Adam Kuehl solid 62.29 in discus.

At Southamerican GP meet last week in Buenos Aires home world junior champion German Chiaraviglio achieved 555 and tried for 565 cm in Pole Vault. He is adviced by former Bubka and current Isinbayeva coach Vitaliy Petrov. Earlier at Mar del Plata leg Uruguay´s sprinter excelled – Heber Viera achieved wind-aided 10.31 at 100 m (+2.5) and Andres Silva new 400mHurdles national record 50.40. In Cuenca, Ecuador during national Olympic Festival at high altitude (2400 m) young sprinter Franklin Nazareno (6th last year at World Juniors at 200 m) as Consudatle website reports bettered the national record to excellent 10.22 (+1.1). Olympic and world champion Jefferson Perez went in his hometown the 10 000 m walk in respectable 40:55.0 (concerning the altitude). It was his first competition since beeing 2nd last May at World Cup in La Coruna, Spain.

SEOUL (KOR): It is important to note with help of Tilastopaja that the best European at Sunday´s so far fastest marathon of the season was the Ukrainian Dmytro Baranovsky. He clocked 2:10:51, his national record from last december in Fukuoka is of high quality (2:07:15). Third placed woman Hellen Cherono from Kenya achieved new best 2:29:33 and fourth Thabita Tsatsa new national record for Zimbabwe 2:30:12. Former NR also belonged to her 2:32:09 last december in Taipei.

LONDON (GBR): UK Media are reporting that the nephew of former Olympic sprinter John Regis was named last night as the latest victim in a spate of murders on London's streets. Adam Regis, 15, bled to death after being stabbed close to West Ham's Upton Park stadium in Newham, East London.

Clarification

ROMA: The winner of Rome marathon is Elias Kemboi Chelimo with pre-Sunday best of 2:15:01 in Dubai February 2006 and HM best of 1:03:16 in Nairobi 2005. He was also 14th last November in New York (2:16:33). If stats correct his Rome win was his first while running his fifth marathon. Another Chelimo Kemboi has 2:13:40 from Nairobi 2005.
