Chinese wins in Xiamen

XIAMEN (Mar 31): Home runners triumphed at Xiamen International Marathon. In the male category it was first time in history of the event that a local runner was the best. Li Zhuhong was first at the finish line with 2:13:17. The Gansu Province runner was last year 7th and holds the best asian junior marathon time (2:10:46 in 2001). The 31st finisher at Athens Olympic Games won by 8 seconds before Kenyan Haron Toroitich (has a best of 2:08:34). Next two places were also reserved for Kenyans – Kirwa Kosgei (2:15:47, 10th last year in Chicago) and Julius Kipkemboi. Fresh national CC champion Zhu Xiaolin confirmed great shape and won the women section clocking 2:26:08. She bettered so her last year runner-up position. It is her second best time of the career, she has 2:23:57 from Beijing Marathon 2002. Second place went to 22 years old Sun Weiwei who was the only remaining sub 2:30 at the finish. Zhang Yingying from Inner Mongolia who is only 17 years old achieved great 2:36:52 on 4th place. Emily Samoei from Kenya was the best foreign runner finishing 8th (2:40:18).

US Friday Action

PALO ALTO: First day of Stanford University Invitational saw Lopez Lomong from Sudan the 3000 m NCAA Indoor champion winning the 800 m with solid 1:47.65. In 200 m races Carmelita Jeter clocked new PB 23.35 (+0.1) and Mike Mitchell registered solid 20.63 (+0.9).

COLUMBIA: Weight throw world best holder and this year NCAA indoor champion Brittany Riley bettered her hammer best at Missouri Relays to 67.96 and made another step in direction 70 metres.

BATON ROUGE: Last year NCAA decathlon champion Jake Arnold started his multievents outdoor campaign with improvement of his best 7870 to 7946 at LSU Outdoor Combined. The 23 years old versatile talent registered following individual results: 11.26 – 697 – 14.39 – 201 – 49.26 – 14.46 – 43.43 – 510 – 54.28 – 4:40.60.

DALLAS: Slovak hammer record holder Libor Charfreitag could not travel to Friday´s Arlington competition and Saturday´s UTEP Springtime Invitational in El Paso. „All flights from Dallas to El Paso were cancelled, we had storms and tornados, the same goes also for Arlington,“ he said. His first hammer competition in US this year will be so at MtSAC Relays in Walnut.

Jamaican HS Champs

KINGSTON: The parade of talents is continuing at Jamaican High School Championships which has the official name ISSA/Grace Kennedy School Championships. Beijing 2006 World juniors bronze medallist Yohan Blake (will be 18 this year) bettered his best to 10.21 (-0.9) and won the most prestigious class I at the 100 m. Two years older Remaldo Rose was second (10.43) and claimed he is not totally healthy. In Class II section the 16 years old Dexter Lee clocked excellent 10.41. In the girls short sprint Shillone Calvert (bronze at World Youths 2005) won the Class I achieving 11.38, second place went to Anastacia Leroy as she was rewarded by new PB 11.41. In the Class III only 15 years old Antonique Campbell clocked 11.89. New meet record was achieved by 16 years old Ramone McKenzie at 400 m. He registered 47.30 and if qualified will be the man to watch at World Youths in July in Ostrava. New national junior record was registered for Keiron Stewart at 110 m Hurdles (junior height) with 13.69 (-0.5). He also won the 400mH clocking 51.42. The championships will end on Saturday.

AIMS Congress

XIAMEN: At the 16th AIMS Congress which was held on Thursday and Friday in the chinese city before the Saturday´s marathon Hiroaki Chosa (JPN) was reelected as president of the organisation. The title of the organisation was changed to Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (previously at the end the wording was Road Races). As per the AIMS website Paco Borao was elected as new Vice President, Treasurer remained Al Boka and board members are Horst Milde and newly Vivek Singh and Martha Morales. Next 17th AIMS Congress will be held in April 2009 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Inaugural AIMS/Champion Chip Award for Innovation was presented to Canberra Marathon for innovative programme to encourage children participation.

Future plans

BERLIN: On the eve of Sunday´s Berlin Halfmarathon top women spoke about their future plans. As it looks by now Edith Masai (KEN) and Benita Johnson (AUS) will have another exciting clash at World Championships in Osaka where both want to run 10 000 m. Before that Johnson will compete at London Marathon (her only marathon until Beijing Olympics) and Masai at Hamburg Marathon. German star Irina Mikitenko is thinking about her marathon debut and a possibility is Berlin in September.
