Makau under 59 minutes

BERLIN (GER): Male Kenyan dominance and female clear win by Benita Johnson were the highlights of 27th Berlin Half Marathon. Patrick Makau was leading his countrymates to take the whole podium in new course record 58:56. It is also fourth best all-time mark after this years two WR´s of Samuel Wanjiru (58:35 and 58:53) and Haile Gebrselassies former WR from Phoenix last year (58:55). It is actually the fastest non world record mark. The pace was at Wanjiru´s WR level at 10 km (27:27), but then dropped to 41:46 at 15 km (Wanjiru 41:40) and mainly to 55:53 at 20 km (Wanjiru 55:31). „It is a very fast course where you can also achieve a world record,“ Makau was quoted after the finish-line. He was second in February in Dubai behind Wanjiru. Top six men ran under 1:01 and after this years Dubai Race it was only second time in history that 3 runners went sub one hour in one race. Best non-african was Luis Collazo from Puertorico (1:03:32 as 11th) and best European the German Stefan Koch (1:04:09 as 13th).

Before the 9th km mark the title defender Edith Masai from Kenya dropped down and at the end was only 4th. Australian Benita Johnson remained alone at the front and won in her second best career time 1:08:28. Second and third were Germans Irina Mikitenko (1:09:46) and Luminita Zaituc (1:11:56). Mikitenko in her second HM of the career went for first time sub 70 minutes.

In total 22 048 runners entered the race in excellent weather under blue skies and temperatures up to 18 degrees.

Rothlin runs 2:08:20 new national record

ZURICH (SUI): Swiss runner Viktor Rothlin fulfilled all promises at 5th Zurich Marathon. He won and achieved new national record 2:08:20 (previously 2:09:56 while winning here in 2004). It is the second fastest in the world this year and leading european time. Around 5000 people participated, the half-marathon split was 1:04:09 and from then on Rothlin was alone on his mission. Second placed Kenyan Sammy Kurgat achieved new PB 2:11:36 and third another Kenyan Paul Lomol also a new PB 2:13:16. Fourth Russian Lenar Khusnutdinov achieved also PB 2:13:17, but the real difference of this two runners was only 0.1 s. Eleven runners went under 2:20.

On the women side Russian 2005 National Marathon Champion Nina Podbnebesnova clocked first time in her career sub 2:40 with 2:37:00. Title defender Yelena Tikhonova (RUS) was second 2:38:13 and Kenyan Susan Jepkorir third (2:42:07).

Only seven European countries have better men NR than Switzerland after this Sunday (BEL, ESP, FRA, GBR, ITA, POR, UKR).

Rothlin won a silver medal last year at European Champs and it was his fourth appearance at Zurich marathon (2003-2, 2004-1, 2005-4). „With this race I opened the doors to big marathons, but for the moment I want relax and have enough time to rest,“ he was quoted.

The singer Joey Kelly finished at 491 place with 3:05:16.

David Kosgei wins in Thessaloniki

THESSALONIKI (GRE): Kenyan David Kosgei won the second edition of Alexander the Great Marathon in Thessaloniki. His winning time was 2:13:49. Cold and rainy weather hampered the plans of the organisers to attack the last years debuting winning times (2:11:35 and 2:28:22). Kenya scored also women win by favourite Elizabeth Chemweno with 2:36:04. The battle for first place was close as Henry Cherono lost his leading position only in last 5 metres as per www.athletix.org. Some 500 runners participated and the winners got first place bonuses 6500 E and 4500 E.
Pacemaker Iaroslav Musinschi from Moldova (best of 2:13:39) made a good job at half-way with 1:05:34 and he was able to follow the pace until the 35 km mark. After that Kenyans remained alone and were more concentrated on winning, than on times. „The last kilometre was a catatostrophy from our point of view,“ said the LOC General Secretary Georgios Constantopoulos who had hoped for faster times. But the drama was there as second placed Henry Cherono was behind the winner only by one second (2:13:50). Additionally only around 8 degrees and rain was not very usual weather for Greece climate.

Rigaudo and Dos Santos wins in Lugano

LUGANO (SUI, Apr 1): Italian European Championships 2006 bronze medallist Elisa Rigaudo clocked a new event record 1:32:25 while winning the women´s 20 km walking race at 5th Memorial Mario Albisetti in Lugano, Switzerland. This walking meeting had for the first time an EAA Permit and men title went to Brasilian Pan Am Games medallist Mario dos Santos who achieved 1:27:40. He missed the event record by 2 minutes (Italian Michele Didoni 1:25:40 in 2002). More than 50 walkers from 9 countries competed at 2 km course near the famous Lugano Lake in good walking weather with temperatures around 10 degrees. Best Swiss walker Marie Polli wanted to attack the Osaka Standard (1:36:30), but missed it by more than 2 minutes as she was second in 1:38:43. There was prize money for top 8 walkers, winners got each 1000 E. It was second EAA Permit Walking Meeting of the season, next is in Podebrady, CZE (Apr 14).

Kenyan triple at Stramilano

MILANO (ITA): Kenyan triple win also happened at the 36th Stramilano Half-Marathon Race with record participation 4600 runners, but in total the new participation record is unbelievable 50 000 including other distances. Philemon Kisang was the best (1:00:55), next places went to Jackson Kirwa (1:01:17) and Paul Kimugul (1:01:49). Olympic champion Stefano Baldini was excellent fourth (1:02:10) in his preparation for London Marathon. Hungarian Aniko Kalovics was the expected female winner and 1:08:58 was a new course record and national record and european leading time of the season. Nadia Ejaffini (Bahrain) 1:10:38 (also NR) and Maria De La Cruz from Mexico completed the podium (1:12:09).

OVERSEAS ACTION

RIO DE JANEIRO (BRA): At first of Brasilian long distance series meet the last year New York winner Marilson dos Santos showed good shape with winning the 10 000 m race in 28:28.14. His target is London Marathon. PanAm junior champion Sabine Heitling achieved first time in her career sub 10 minutes steeple with 9:57.93.

DURBAN (RSA): Louis Van Zyl clocked at National Students Championships in his first hurdles race of the year 49.01 and fulfilled the Osaka standard. Commonwealth Champion from last year and World junior champion from 2002 at 400 m Hurdles plans this year to go under 48 seconds (his best 48.05). Second placed Pieter Koekemoer bettered his best to excellent 49.04. With Myburgh, Villiers and Cilliers there are now 5 contenders for 3 spots in Osaka in South African Team. Other two good marks were aided by too strong wind. Leigh Julius clocked 20.39 at 200 m (+2.6) and Karin Mey achieved in Long Jump 684 (+4.2).

KINGSTON (JAM): Boys of Calabar High School and girls of Holmwood Technical were the team winners at 96th Jamaican High School Championships (first time held in 1910). The star was 17 years old sprinter Yohan Blake who after winning the 100 m earlier was also the best at 200 m (20.62) and got another two golds in relays which were won by his team St. Yago clocking two new event records 39.80 and 3:09.51. First time in the history of the event a sub 40 seconds time was registered. Keiron Stewart got another national junior record at 110 m Hurdles winning the finals in 13.53 (in heats 13.69, junior height). Riker Hylton was the best at 400 m clocking 46.28. In Class II another potential star is emerging. Ramone McKenzie (his age allows him to compete at Worlds U17 this year) won the 200 m (20.89) and 400 m (47.24, new event record for that class). In the girls events Anastacia Leroy won the 200 m in very good 23.12, while in class II Danielle Jeffrey (17 years) got 23.65 and Antonique Campbell (15 years) in class III 24.14. Bobby-Gaye Wilkins achieved one of the fastest Jamaican junior times at 400 m 52.14 and in class II Shana-Gaye Tracey (16 years) got excellent 53.33.

ADDIS ABABA (ETH): As IAAF reports Asselefech Mergia won the 5 km road race devoted only to women with a time of 16:13.16. In fourth edition some 8000 runners participated. First foreign runner was Rose Jepkemboi of Kenya finishing 8th (16:53.45).

US ACTION

PALO ALTO (USA): At Stanford Invitational the most anticipated was the men 10 000 m race. The US Half Marathon record holder Ryan Hall confirmed great shape before his marathon debut in London beeing third in his first track race at this distance ever with 28:07.93. He was beaten only by Kenyans Nicodemus Naimadu (also 10 000 m debut) 28:06.26 and Stephen Samoei (also PB) 28:07.65. On the women side Blake Russell clocked 32:31.90. Both 10 000 m winning times are the fastest so far this year. Kara Goucher won the 1500 m (4:11.58) and Kelly Strong achieved new steeple PB 9:47.68. Interesting to note the 11th place of Nicole Teter at 1500 m (4:20.66). In sprints Jason Heard clocked new best at 100 m with 10.26 (+1.6, before he had only 10.39 from 2004) and Candice Davis made another improvement at 100 m Hurdles with 12.91 (-0.5). This time she was pushed by Canadian Olympian Angela Whyte who got 12.99. In technical events the Estonian Mart Israel bettered his best in discus to 63.64 and Suzy Powell threw also very good 63.60 in women section. Jillian Camarena missed her outdoor shot best only by 10 cm, her 18.92 is second best global mark of the outdoor season.


TALLAHASSEE (USA): New Jamaican Shot Put record was achieved by Dorian Scott at Florida State University Relays. He registered 20.52 and bettered his previous best by 18 cm (20.34 last year while winning the Central American Games). He also equalled his overall best 20.52 from indoor 2006. Florida State clocked 39.57 at 4x100 m with the composition Bolden – Dix – Garvin – Nabe/SUI.

CHARLOTTE (USA): Anwar Moore clocked good 13.61 (+1.3) while winning the 110 m Hurdles at Charlotte Invitational.

COLUMBIA (USA): Last year Jamaican 110mH Champion Decosma Wright won at Missouri Relays with solid 13.67.

EL PASO (USA): World class sprinter Churandy Martina from Netherlands Antilles clocked new best at 400 m 46.13 at UTEP Springtime Invitational. Second placed Kenyan Elias Koech achieved also new best 46.14. French Michael Hanany went over 224 in High jump and Netherlands Daniel Ward was second at 200 m (21.03). The winner was Michael Cooley (20.90).

STARKVILLE (USA): Jamaican sprinter Steve Mullings achieved a wind-aided double at Bulldog Relays 10.31 (+2.5) and 20.60 (+2.1). Anton Hicks had more luck at 110mHurdles with legal wind +1.2 and time 13.59.

BATON ROUGE (USA): Both home female relay teams of LSU clocked good times 43.73 (4x100, second fastest 2007) and 3:32.80 (4x400, fastest in the world this year) at LSU Tiger Classic. Kelly-Ann Baptiste from Trinidad who is a part of the team won the 200 m with fastest time outdoors 22.95 (+1.5). Already in her first outdoor 200 m of the year she came close to her NR from last year (22.73). Norwegian Elisabeth Slettum was 8th (23.78). Jamaican Nickiesha Wilson won the 400 m Hurdles with another fastest time of the year 56.99. Aulton Kohn (22) was not allowed to have the joy from new PB in the men´s 100 m (10.31) as the race was supported by +2.9 wind.

ATLANTA (USA): Hurdles World indoor champion Terrence Trammell who was not running indoors started the year at Yellow Jacket Invitational with a 200 m race and clocked as 7th 21.11. His best from 1998 is 20.74. The race was won by Evander Wells (US relay medallist from last year World Juniors) who made another big improvement to 20.43 (+1.7), second place went to 2000 Olympic Champion at 400 m Hurdles Angelo Taylor who too registered new PB at this distance 20.60. Taylor also won the 400 m in good 45.75 while the world indoor relay champion Milton Campbell was second (46.11). World junior champion 2004 Aries Merritt was the best at 110mHurdles achieving fast 13.32 (0.0). The 400 m Hurdles was dominated by LaRon Bennett (49.59) and Justin Gaymon (49.75, another best after last weekend 49.81). Croatian Andras Haklits won the hammer (75.91) and Jamaican Elva Goulbourne registered 658 (+2.2) in Long Jump.

FORT COLLINS (USA): Fifth from this indoor US Nationals at 60 m John Woods clocked new 100 m best at Tom Benich Invitational. With legal +1.7 wind he achieved 10.17 in 1521 m altitude.

OTHER RESULTS

BRUNSSUM (NED): Last years world 10 000 m track leader Micah Kogo missed only by 5 seconds the road world record of Haile Gebrselassie at 10 km. He won on Saturday the Parelloop clocking 27:07, while Gebre achieved in December 2002 in Doha 27:02. Kogo so missed also the 25 000 E bonus for breaking this mark. His 5 km split was 13:24. AZKOITIA (ESP): Very fast times at 14th Azkoitia-Azpeitia Half-Marathon race. Yaret Asmeron from Eritrea (national marathon record holder) won the male category in 1:00:28 and second placed Kenyan William Chebor was also under 1:01 with 1:00:51. Best European was the spanish runner Pablo Lopez (6th 1:04:50). Pamela Chepchumba was the best woman achieving excellent PB 1:08:57. Second placed Spanish runner Alessandra Aguilar achieved new best 1:11:34.

LAREDO (ESP): 10 km road race was won by Morrocan Mohamed Amyn (28:31) just 2 seconds before Kenyan Kiprono Menjo (28:33). Third place went to spanish champion Juan Carlos de la Ossa (28:39) who is in preparation for London Marathon.

NOVE MESTO NAD VAHOM (SVK, Mar 31): At National CC champs Marcel Matanin won the main category at 9 km and it was his 8th CC national title. Miroslav Vanko won the milers race for the fifth time in a row. Title holders – men 9 km: 1. Marcel Matanin 30:46, 4,5 km: 1. Miroslav Vanko 16:31, wom 4,5 km: 1. Ludmila Melicherova 19:42

MADRID (ESP): Madrid Half-Marathon winners: Francis Komu (KEN) 1:04:13 and Ana Burgos (ESP) 1:15:24.

BRATISLAVA (SVK, Apr 1): Second edition of Tatra Banka City Marathon in Bratislava was won by Poland´s Artur Blasinski (2:25:09) and Slovakia´s Dana Janeckova (2:56:22). Both times are new event bests. Some 1000 runners participated in all events in nice spring sunny weather. Top 3 – men: 1. Artur Blasinski,POL 2:25:09, 2. Bohdan Dziuba,POL 2:25:11, 3.
