Oliver 13.26 at 110H

GAINESVILLE (USA): High hurdler David Oliver is already early in the season faster and faster. During the first day of 63rd Florida Relays in Gainesville he sped to world leading 13.26 (+0.9). He bettered his own WL by 0.01. Second placed Linnie Yarbrough confirmed the earlier improvement with 13.49. Ernest Wiggins won the 100 m in 10.31 (+0.4) and Rickey Harris (2002 NCAA 400H Champion) returned with 46.40 flat win. Kevin Hicks was the best at 800 m with solid 1:47.75.On the women side Jamaican Patricia Hall came close to her 400 m PB (51.45) with 51.52 and beat the Olympic and World finalist Dee Dee Trotter (51.88). Another Jamaican Kenia Sinclair the national record holder at 800 m won the 1500 m (4:16.88). In the technical events James Beckford (JAM, 796) and Brenda Faluade (USA, 653 +0.2, new PB) registered solid wins in Long Jump. US Hammer record holder Erin Gilreath started the season with 68.38 m. Fast times at both 4x200 m relays by World Express Team on men side (1:21.37) and South Carolina on women (1:32.16). From European point of view third places for Juisi Heikkila (FIN) at 400 m Hurdles (51.38) and Austrian Lisi Maurer at 100 m Hurdles (13.47).

Dix 10.11 at 100 m

AUSTIN (USA): Walter Dix showed his capabilities while clocking second fastest time of the season 10.11 (+0.6) in 100 m heats of 80th Texas Relays. Faster is so far only the Australian Joshua Ross (10.08). Finals are scheduled for Saturday and weather forecast is not very optimistic with cool weather. Greg Bolden was also fast with 10.30 (+0.9) and young Rynell Parson in High School section achieved 10.34 (+3.8). World junior relay champion from last year Alexandria Anderson achieved the fastest time in women 100 m heats 11.22 (+1.6), Jamaican Simone Facey got 11.27 (+0.8, her best 11.22). In HS section the 18 years old talent Bianca Knight registered 11.36 (+1.6) and Tiffany Townsend of same age was even faster with 11.26 but aided by +2.9 win. Florida State University men team achieved 39.24 at 4x100 m in heats and will target (including Dix) the 39 seconds in finals (WL so far 38.70).

Kenyan Nicodemus Naimadu (NCAA II section) after his last weekend 10 000 m world leader came to win the steeple race with 8:38.71 and so showed enough power. „Of course it is soon after my 10 000 m race, but I wanted to defend my steeple title from last year,“ he was quoted by meet website. His best is 8:29.82 from last year. Seeing the 10k improvement he should be ready for a much faster time in the steeple. In technical events during the fourth day of the relays Destinee Hooker back after injury won the High Jump with 189 and so got her 4th win at the event in a row (twice in HS section and now twice in College Department). Trinidadian World Junior Champion 2006 in Long Jump Rhonda Watkins (UCLA) attacked her best in Long Jump, unfortunately her 671 mark was aided by +3.0 wind. Her best so remains 664 from early March. The best legal jump she produced was 648 (+0.9). Her target could well be the national record 678 by Onika James in 2003 later in the season. NCAA Champion Tone Belt also got wind-aided 785 (+2.9) win. Arizona discus thrower Adam Kuehl won his event and registered 62.29, not far away from his best 63.89 in last year.

Today 11th European Cup 10 000 m

FERRARA (ITA): Favourites spoke before today 11th European Cup 10 000 m in Ferrara, Italy. Interesting is that turkish women favourite Elvan Abeylegesse announced she wants to double in Osaka at 5000 m and 10 000 m. Spanish favourite Jose Rios admitted he is not in the best shape as he is in marathon preparation for Osaka. Home European Indoor Champion Cosimo Caliandro has a 28:30 target in his debut at the distance. UK´s Jo Pavey will return after the race back to her training base in South Africa. AUBURN (USA): During first day of Tiger Classic Croatian hammer thrower Andras Haklits got a solid 75.98 m win.

PORTO ALEGRE (BRA): At Brasilian meet the Universiade 2005 Gold Medallist Fabiano Pecanha clocked second fastest time of the year at 800 m 1:46.1.

XIAMEN (CHN): Organisers of last weekend Xiamen Marathon (also National Championships and World Championships Trials) registered in all categories and including all races 24 500 runners which is record high for the event. Participants from 48 countries were entered and one would wonder how this figures could go higher in the country with the biggest population if running becomes more popular.

MONTE CARLO (POR): In the latest IAAF annoucement about confirmed doping cases (as informed in EME NEWS 94/2007) is also Portuguese runner Fernando Silva. He had positive out-of-competition test on Dec 4 in Portugal (rhEPO). He will be banned until Jan 17, 2009. He admitted he took banned substances and no hearings are necessary as per portuguese media. The 27 years old runner must so return also his silver medal from European CC Championships last December in Italy (Dec 10, exactly 6 days after he had positive test). He was initially second behind Mo Farah. When results oficially changed by European Athletics the silver will go to Juan Carlos de la Ossa from Spain and bronze to Mustafa Mohamed from Sweden. Also Portuguese Team will be downgraded to bronze (initially second) and Spain would go to the silver position. France remains of course as a title winner.
