Oliver wants to go to Osaka

GAINESVILLE: American High Hurdler David Oliver aims to qualify to Osaka World Championships. „That is my goal,“ he said through his agent Marisa Reich. During the weekend he achieved new world lead 13.26 at Florida Relays. All signs are there that he soon will be able to run sub 13.20. His best so far from last year cold Dubnica Meet in Slovakia in August is exactly 13.20. The 24 years athlete never so far competed at big championships, this indoor was third at US Nationals. He only once made it to the finals outdoors (beeing 8th in 2005). Internationally he will compete in Doha, Qatar early May at IAAF Super Grand Prix, then three top meets of US scene (Carson, New York, Eugene) and before the Nationals he will made it to Oslo for Bislett Games, the first part of Golden League 2007. The 110mH are a Golden League event this season – the cards are open for many top hurdlers to try for the jackpot (not only USA, but mainly Liu Xiang, Robles and Doucoure). For World Championships USA can send this time only three athletes as the title in 2005 went to Ladji Doucoure (FRA). From 10 world titles so far 7 went to USA (Allen Johnson 4 and Greg Foster 3). The remaining two are belonging to Colin Jackson (GBR).

Clay will compete also this week

POMONA: Decathlon world champion and olympic silver medallist Bryan Clay showed great shape with 70m+ javelin during the weekend in Pomona. He will continue in individual starts before his first decathlon of the year end of May in Gotzis, Austria. He will show up at Azusa Pacific Decathlon on Wednesday and Thursday, but only in selected events. First day he is scheduled to do Long Jump and Shot Put and second day 110m Hurdles and Pole Vault. At the open meet on Friday he will additionally run the 200 m (best so far 21.34 in 2005).

Results Update

UTRECHT: The 7th Fortis Utrecht Marathon ended on Easter Monday with huge success. New participant record (13.000) and new course record for men were registered. Unheralded Mariko Kiplagat from Kenya won in 2:11:16 and bettered clearly the 2:13:43 by Luc Krotwaar (2003) and also his own best 2:15:20 from last year in Bremerhaven, Germany. Closely behind was Marrakech 2007 winner Sammy Chumba who also get PB 2:11:22 (before 2:11:43 in January in Morroco). John Rono made it full podium for Kenya as third (2:13:33). Last year winner 40 years old Belgian Gino Van Geyte was 6th (2:19:54). Poland´s Joanna Chmiel won the women race (2:47:09, she has best of 2:35:07).

PROVIDENCIALES: Jamaica was the best country with 79 medals at 36th CARIFTA junior and youth Games in Turks and Caicos. It was already for 23rd time in the history of the event that the Jamaicans claimed the top nation spot. They got for example 7 relay golds, only girls U20 4x100 m was missing. The 16 years old and so eligibile for World U17 Champs in Ostrava Ramone McKenzie competed in the U20 category and won the 200 m in new great personal best 20.58. That makes him a clear favourite for the gold in Czech Republic. His category had another Jamaican winner Dexter Lee who clocked 21.09. In the girls 200 m Jamaican Antonique Campbell (15 years old) won the U17 (23.78) and Nivea Smith from Bahamas was the best in the U19 (23.45). In the 110 hurdles Ryan Brathwaite from Barbados won the U19 clocking 13.42 and second placed Kieron Stewart got another National junior record for Jamaica (13.49, but junior hurdles). Shermaine Williams won the girls U19 100mH (13.51) for Jamaica, but U17 gold went to Jessica Alcan from Martinique (13.67). Event record was registered for junior shot putter Raymond Brown (JAM, 18.27, 6 kg). Jamaican relay wins – boys 4x100 m U17 41.11, U19 39.47, 4x400 m U17 3:16.31, U19 3:07.10, girls 4x100 m U17 45.56, 4x400 m U17 3:43.79, U19 3:36.26. Only the U19 girls team was beaten by Bahamas (44.94 – 45.02). Next CARIFTA Games 2008 will be held in St. Kitts and Nevis.

KUMAMOTO (JPN): Josphat Ndambiri from Kenya recorded at Kanaguri Distance Meet so far the fastest 5000 m time of the season 13:28.44. As Ken Nakamura reports women 5000 m also brought world leading 15:19.19 by another Japan based Kenyan Fyles Ongori, Second placed World Junior 2006 bronze medallist at 1500 m Yuriko Kobayashi bettered her best to 15:21.37.

Other Briefs

LONDON (GBR): David Martin reports that Jo Pavey after missing the Osaka standard on Saturday in Ferrara is considering other options to get the norm at 10 000 m. She initially thought about a race in Stanford, USA on April 29, but then decided to return to her altitude place in South Africa. Currently the target could be the Utrecht Night of the 10 000 m on May 17. If she will compete there her road plans for Edinburgh (May 6) and Manchester (May 20) might be cancelled.

LAWRENCE (USA): The US high hurdles record holder Dominique Arnold plans to return after last years injury. The 33 years old athlete (last year 12.90 in Lausanne) did not raced since July last year (Rethymno, Greece, July 21, windy 13.03). Now he is scheduled to compete at Kansas Relays on April 21. Olympic champion Joanna Hayes (100mH) and World Champion Bershawn Jackson (400mH) are also mentioned by Kansad media as headliners of the event.

ATHENS: Former world medallist in Javelin throw Kostas Gatsioudis frome Greece is aiming for another comeback. As reported by greek website hellenicathletes.com the national record holder (91.69 in 2000) who was not able to compete in last five years (only one competition since 2002 last year in Chania with 75.40) hopes to compete this summer. He had shoulder injury and currently has problems with knee.

NEW YORK: Former 100 m world record holder Tim Montgomery registered another setback in his life. He is connected to five milion dollar fraud. According to news agencies reports he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud in three counts. He should be sentenced in November. Montgomery fortunately for the sport retired in 2005 after recieving a two year ban. All his results since March 2001 including world record 9.78 were cancelled. Also Montreal 1976 Relay Gold Medallist and currently a succesfull coach Steve Riddick is connected to the fraud, he was due in court later in the week.

TARGU JIU (ROM): Addition from last weekend on April 1 at Romanian Marathon Championships Alina Gherasim won the women section in 2:42:31 and second place went to Valentina Delion (MDA) 2:44:28. Men title was won by Petrea Hristea (2:24:27).
