Mexican jumpers impressive, Charfreitag over 80 metres, Powell did not run

WALNUT: Final day of 49th MtSAC Relays in Walnut brought some fine performances. In total 5 new (men HT, 4x100 m, women 400H, LJ, 4x400 m) and 2 equalled (women PV and 4x100 m) world bests 2007 were registered. But the appearance of fastest man in the world Asafa Powell did not happened. He felt his right knee and as a precaution measure did not run. His agent Paul Doyle than informed that his next race should be a relay at Penn Relays and most probably first individual 100 m of the year at Kingston International on May 5. He also confirmed the only date yet fixed until Jamaican Trials end of May is the Eugene Pre Classic on June 10. He also confirmed that Powell is not planning to run the whole Golden League Series and that maximum of five races in Europe before Osaka are the target. The last most probably Stockholm DN Galan on Aug 7.

SPRINTS AND RELAYS

Jamaican Chris Williams won the invitational 100 m with 10.12, but was aided by +2.1 wind. Wallace Spearmon as second clocked 10.14, third Leroy Dixon achieved 10.18 but no PB due to wind. Jason Heard was also supported by too strong wind (+2.3) in his 10.18 in other division. Mike Mitchell bettered his best from 20.59 to 20.33 at 200 m (+0.9) and was just 0.01 behind the WL mark. Lionel Larry got the 400 m in 45.72. Ryan Wilson won the high hurdles, another windy race and achieved 13.36 (+2.6). Former Olympic Champion Angelo Taylor was the best in his event 400 m Hurdles with 49.40, just 0.07 behind was Derrick Williams (49.47).

Former Arkansas Athletes won the invitational 4x100 m in new world lead 38.30. USA Red was second (39.04), MVP of Jamaican coach Stephen Francis without Powell third (39.11) and HSI Team only fourth 39.45.

Twenty-seven years old Carmelita Jeter is so fast as never before, she won the 100 m in new best 11.16 (+0.9). LaShauntea Moore got windy 200 m in 23.04 (+2.7), 2003 100 m World Champion Torri Edwards was fourth (23.39). World Champion at 200 m Allyson Felix showed great deal of speed indurance and won the 400 m in 51.74 what is her second fastest of the career (she has 51.12 in 2005). Wind did not allowed Jenny Adams to jump to first place of World Lists 2007, her 12.75 100mHurdles win was aided by +2.1. Second placed Candice Davis could not celebrate new best (12.88), third place went to Canadian Angela Whyte (healthy again) with the same time. Jamaican World Juniors 2002 silver medallist Melanie Walker achieved first sub 56 seconds at 400 m Hurdles of the year. Her win was worth of 55.99. Second Shauna Smith beat by 0.01 the 100mH Olympic champion Joanna Hayes (56.56). She has a best of 54.57 in 1999 and last time raced at this distance back in 2004 (55.74). Both relays were dominated by MVP Teams from Jamaica (including world fastest Sherone Simpson) clocking world leads 43.25 and 3:30.58.

DISTANCES

Mexican Juan Luis Barrios (23) after Friday´s 5000 m world lead bettered his best on a mile with 3:58.18. Last year Australian junior Lachlan Renshaw won the invitational 800 m in 1:47.06, mile star Alan Webb was third (1:47.32). In University division 800 m hurdles champion Felix Sanchez finished only 9th (1:58.89).

JUMPS

Mexican jumpers steal the show. Gerardo Martinez is the first from his country with a 230 cm mark in High Jump and Giovanni Lanaro with 581 cm bettered not only national but also continental best. Russ Buller confirmed good early shape with second place and 573 cm and Japanese record holder Daichi Sawano was third (562). Olympic medallist Toby Stevenson made a „nh“. In the high jump next places were for 224 (Jesse Williams and a tie for Jamie Nieto and Jim Dilling). World Long Jump champion Dwight Phillips was the best in his speciality with 815 and was also 6th at 100 m (10.33w). He afterwards said that his goal is third world title this year in Osaka after Paris and Helsinki. French Julien Kapek won the triple with windy 16.47 m.

Mexican win also happened in women HJ by Romary Rifka, but after her recent 195 at home she went only over 185 cm. Top US jumper Amy Acuff was only 8th (180). Chinese Gao Shuying (27) achieved new Asian record 455 cm and bettered her former record by 2 cm (2005). American Akiba McKinney missed her long jump best from last year in Walnut by only one cm (683, +0.3)), second Brianna Glenn achieved new PB 671 (+1.6). Jade Johnson from Great Britain was 5th (645 +1.5).

THROWS

Slovakian hammer record holder Libor Charfreitag got his 7th (out of 8 starts) Mt SAC Relays win and first 80+ since 2005 at this meet. His 80.36 were achieved in third throw. „I did not expected it, I hoped for 78.50 but not more. The conditions were excellent, but I still feel that many improvements in my technique are possible. Next competition will be at Penn Relays,“ he said aftewards. Canadian Dylan Armstrong confirmed 20 m shape with very good 20.58 in Shot Put (just 4 cm behind his best), collegian Noah Bryant was second (20.18, his outdoor best). Indoor Weight throw all-time leader Brittany Riley came closer to 70 m in women hammer winning with new best of 69.25 m. She beat all top US throwers (Hart, Cosby, Gilreath).

WALKS

KOBE (JPN): Chinese last year World Cup 8th placer Zhao Chengliang won the Asian 50 km walking championships on Sunday. He registered the second best time of the season 3:44:26. As Ken Nakamura reports second Yuki Yamazaki (JPN) went also under 3:50 with 3:47:40. Third placer was another Chinese Li Jianbo in his alreday second 50 km race of the year (3:53:24, 20 years).

GALATI (ROM): Recep Celik from Turkey won the Balkan Walking Championships at 20 km and so retained his last years title in 1:23:10. Experienced home walker Silviu Casandra was second (1:24:14). Local women dominated their event. Winner Alina Olaru bettered her best to 1:33:14, second place went to Veronica Budileanu (1:33:40). New greek senior record was achieved by winner of junior 10 000 m race Alexandros Papamihail clocking excellent 42:08.49.

ROAD

LISBOA (POR): Kenyan Sammy Tum (28) in his marathon debut won on Sunday the Carlos Lopes Marathon in Portugal. His time 2:17:54. Another Kenyan Peter Kwalia finished second in new best of 2:19:32.

DEBRECEN (HUN): Another Kenyan win over the weekend was registered in Hungary at the 4th Debrecen Marathon. Philip Serem clocked new best of 2:10:45 what is also a new course record. Second placed Richard Mutai also got new PB 2:11:52. Best local runner at third place was Tamas Toth who also achieved new best 2:16:31. Third placer from this year February Sevilla Marathon Katalin Farkas was the best woman with 2:45:54.

DEUTSCHLANDSBERG (AUT): Steeple specialist Martin Proll won the national 10 km road race championships with 29:30. Susanne Pumper was the best woman (33:43) ahead of Slovenian veteran Helena Javornik (33:59).

NASAVRKY (CZE): Kenyan Stanley Kipkosgei was the clear winner of th 33rd annual of 15 km race with 45:00. Coming back after last year accident in Nigeria was the European Mountain Running Champion Anna Pichrtova as female winner (53:49).

BRESCIA (ITA): Vivicitta races at 12 km were held in 37 italian cities. The best times were achieved by Morrocan Jamal Chatbi in Brescia (35:08) and Zakia Mrisho from Tanzania in Bolzano (40:51).

TRACK

ATHENS (USA): LaRon Bennett clocked exactly 50.00 at 400 m Hurdles during final day of Spec Towns Invitational in Georgia. World junior 2004 Champion Shalonda Solomon won the 200 m in 23.09 (+0.5).

BENIDORM (ESP): At last meeting of „Alicante Region Series“ elite Morrocan runner Hicham Bellani won the 3000 m with 7:56.50. Elijah Chelimo (KEN) produced solid 5:34.96 at 2000 m Steeple, women version of this event was won by Ethiopian Netsanet Achamo (4th at last year African Champs in Steeple) in 6:32.69 (world best is 6:04.46). Slovakian jumper Jana Veldakova won her event with 620 cm and Norwegian record holder Mona Holm registered 63.95 in Hammer.

MAUI (USA): Hawaian winds helped discus throwers at special competition for this event called „Maui Big Wind Discus Challenge“. Suzy Powell registered 67.67 new world lead and US record. The former official mark 66.10 by Carol Cady is dated back to 1986. There was also 69.44 for Powell in La Jolla in April 2002 but this mark was not ratified due to technical issues. Becky Breisch as second registered also a personal best 66.06. Ian Waltz won the men contest in another world lead 67.30 and had two more 65+ throws. Jarred Rome was second (63.46).

TSHWANE (RSA): During final day of South African Junior and Youth Champs some interesting results in altitude were registered in sprints. Kagiso Kumbane sped to 20.82 at 200 m, Willie De Beer to 46.32 at 400 m and Piet Beneke 50.74 at 400 m Hurdles.

BRIEFS

PARIS: French 1500 m record holder Hind Dehiba (4:00.49 in 2005) will be banned for two years by her national federation. It was reported by the agencies. In January in her bags at the airport banned substances were found and subsuquently she tested positive for EPO. She won bronze at European Indoors 2005 in Madrid and was fourth at World Indoors 2006.

AUCKLAND: New Zealand named 11 athletes (5 men and 6 women) for Osaka World Championships. Including in this first announced team members are both female top throwers – shot putter Valerie Vili and discus thrower Beatrice Faumuina.

ATLANTA: Member of new club Doyle Track Club (created by agent and coach Paul Doyle) Brianna Glenn (26) made progress this weekend. She bettered her best in Long Jump at MtSAC in Walnut as second to 671 cm (until now she had 668 since 2005) and won her 100 m race clocking 11.28 just 0.01 slower than her best. She is currently coached by world record holder Mike Powell and as it looks this new cooperation brings the expected improvements.
