Alekna over 70 metres

VILNIUS (LTU, Apr 18): At todays Vilnius City Championships in throwing events the world best discus thrower Virgilijus Alekna started the season with a 70 metres throw. In fourth series he got 70.01 m what is his 14th competition of the career with 70 m plus result. Nobody else in discus history has such a number. He started with world lead 69.60, then achieved 69.49 and 66.09 before the best throw. Last two attempts were fouls. Alekna had very good winter training in South Africa and looks forward to defend his titles from Paris and Helsinki in Osaka. He last time lost a competition on Aug 16 2005 in Tallinn.

Golden League 2008 final in Brussels

BRUSSELS: The Golden League final 2008 will be in Brussels. The organisers of Van Damme Memorial informed about that on their website. The 32nd annual of the meet will be held in Olympic year on September 5. This will be the last of the series, as current last ISTAF of Berlin is scheduled for June 1 in 2008. This years Brussels meet will be on Sep 14 and already 24 000 tickets are sold. Since the start of Golden League in 1998 Berlin was always the final place, except of first year in Moscow and 2003 in Brussels.

Hoffa gets award

NEW YORK: World leading shot putter Reese Hoffa was awarded today as athlete of the year of the New York AC. The World Indoor Champion 2006 leads the yearly list with 21.84 m. His next competition is in Dakar at the World Athletics Tour, but on Apr 27. Shot Put will be actually contested on Island Goree the day before the main meet. Then he is scheduled to compete at top US meets and Nationals. He comes over to Europe for Ostrava Golden Spike on June 27.

Hellebaut and Bergqvist signed for GL

BRUSSELS: After Pole Vault multiple record holder Yelena Isinbayeva from Russia another top European Athletes signed for the whole Golden League circuit. During a press conference in Brussels it was announced that top High Jumpers world champion Kajsa Bergvist from Sweden and European Champion out and in Tia Hellebaut from Belgium will compete at all six meetings of the series. Both admitted it will be difficult in their event be able to win all six and so to get the part of the jackpot. Even Hellebaut lost two competitions this winter – in Gent to Veneva and in Stockholm to Bergqvist and Vlasic.

Pappas to compete at Drake Relays

DES MOINES: Former decathlon world champion (2003) Tom Pappas is back in competition businness. He is scheduled to compete at 98th Drake Relays end of April in Long Jump. He is returning after series of injuries. And since 2004 had only one decathlon last year at US Nationals where ho won scoring 8319 points. He already got end of March in Houston 49.06 at 400 m and 49.00 m in Discus. He is scheduled to compete in Gotzis, Austria end of May at one of the most prestigius decathlons the Hypomeeting.

Chicago is closing the registrations

CHICAGO: The jubilee 30th LaSalle Bank Chicago marathon is at the entry capacity of 45 000 runners already now, nearly six months before the October 7 event. In 2006 the possibility was increased to 40 000 and for 2007 for 45 000. “We have enjoyed a wonderful and colorful history with this race and are humbled by the increasing enthusiasm that welcomes it year after year,” said Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski in a Press Release sent by the organisers. “As we prepare for our 30th anniversary celebration, we are inspired by the energy with which our participants, spectators, volunteers, sponsors and the city of Chicago are approaching this event. We are looking forward to another year of great competition and the multitude of touching stories that characterize our field of dedicated runners.” The registration started on January 1, 2007.

Talpos the women favourite

WIEN: The Vienna City Marathon on April 29 will not have the women defending champion competing. Tomo Morimoto from Japan cancelled her participation due to ankle injury. The main favourite remains so Luminita Talpos from Romania. The 34 years old runner had a marathon last time back in 2005 and her only sub 2:30 happened in 2003 in January in Osaka with 2:27:32. But the local fans will cheer for Susanne Pumper who debuted last year in Vienna and registered new national record as 4th (2:32:21). Men favourite is as already informed by EME NEWS the former steeple world record holder Bernard Barmasai from Kenya. It is expected that some 24 000 runners will participate.

Privalova and Isinbayeva for IAAF ranks

MOSCOW: The Russian Athletics Federation decided about its nominations for August IAAF elections. President Valentin Balakhnichev will bid for Council Membership. Because of this he no more candidated for European Athletics vice-president post during last weekend. Newly elected European Athletics council member Vadim Zelichonok will bid for Technical Committee post. Also two great athletes want to work for the world athletics movement. Former Olympic champion at 400mH Irina Privalova is the candidate for women committee and current Pole Vault Star Yelena Isinbayeva is considering to bid for Athletes Commission.

Howe and Di Martino first stars

TORINO: For the EAA Premium Meet in Torino (June 8) Italy´s two current stars were announced as participants. The 13th Primo Nebiolo Memorial will face European Long jump Champion Andrew Howe and this indoor two metres high jumper Antoinetta Di Martino. FIDAL website informed about it.

Nairobi meet cancelled

NAIROBI: As East African Standard informs the African Confederation Permit Meet of Nairobi (planned for May 5) was cancelled due to lack of the sponsorship.

IAAF Nutrition Conference

MONTE CARLO: IAAF is hosting this week 2007 Nutritional Consensus Conference. World leading experts on nutrition are taking part. The issues are the nutritional needs for each of the specific athletic disciplines, as well as other areas such as competition day, travel, illness, and supplements.

Lima 10.25 at 100 m

SAO PAULO: At Sao Paulo regional meet Brasilian sprinter Vicente Lenilson de Lima clocked solid 10.25 at 100 m. His best from 2004 is 10.13. In the high hurdles World Juniors 2004 finalist Eder de Souza bettered his best to 13.60.

Belarus Walking Champions

NESVICH: Ivan Trotskiy and Elena Ginko are this years Belarus walking champions. In the absence of European Champion Rita Turava (she competed in Rio Maior) the winning time for Ginko as IAAF reports was 1:31:55. Trotskiy registered 1:21:33.

Again strong discus marks

MAUI: Hawaian winds helped also on the second day of discus challenge. This time even two competitions in one day were held. World Champs 2005 7th placer Jarred Rome got in first nearly PB 67.41 and in second new PB 68.37 (and at that time a WL, later bettered by Alekna). Ian Waltz also registered great marks 65.90 and 67.98. In the women section fresh US record holder Suzy Powell lost in first competition to Becky Breisch who registered a great PB of 67.37 m (before Maui 63.53, then in first meet 66.06). Powell was second with 65.34, but won the second event in 66.23 as Breisch achieved 65.78.

Vries wins in Namibia

WINDHOEK: At11th Frankie Fredericks Invitational South African sprinter Sherwin Vries achieved the best result. He clocked 10.34 to win the 100 m. He is this year double national champion in sprints.
