Powell withdraws from Penn and Kingston

ATLANTA: Fastest man on earth Asafa Powell will not run in next two weeks. Due to his knee tendonitis he withdrew from Penn Relays (next weekend) where he planned relay appearance and also from Jamaica Invitiational on May 5 in Kingston where he planned his season 100 m opener. „His knee is still bothering him and we do not want to take any chances,“ explained his agent Paul Doyle for EME News. In longer terms he wants to be ready for Pre Classic in Eugene on June 10.

Jackson world lead 48.75

LAWRENCE: Final day of 80th Kansas Relays brought world lead for world champion Bershawn Jackson who won in his season opener at 400 m Hurdles with 48.75. „The wind affected the race too much, otherwise I was thinking about 48.2 or even a sub 48,“ he explained. Second placed Derrick Williams got 49.31. High hurdlers had more luck with just +2.0 support and so Anwar Moore won in very good 13.38 and second placed Antwon Hicks clocked 13.42, just 0.07 behind his best. Ever young US Champion Jeff Hartwig (39) went over respectable 572 cm in Pole Vault (he tried 582) and second Russ Buller achieved 562 cm. Invitiational events were held as so called Gold Zone. Fast sprints were supported by too strong winds. In invitational 100 m Mark Jelks clocked 10.03 (+2.2) and Ivory Williams got 10.12. Even quicker in college finals was Brendan Christian from Antigua with 10.01 (+2.8). In High School section Maurice Mitchell registered 10.26 (+2.3). Chris Lloyd from Dominica won the 400 m in new PB of 45.40 and missed the national record only by 0.09. British European Indoors medallist Robert Tobin was fourth (47.38).

On the women side world fastest 100 m Hurdles by Nichole Denby who in her season opener achieved 12.72. Wind confirmation is missing because official results are showing NWI (no wind information). Olympic champion Joanna Hayes was second in 12.78 and Priscilla Lopes (CAN) third (12.84). Hayes tried also the 100 m and finished fifth (11.51). The win in this wind-aided race (+2.8) went to Jamaican Nickeisha Anderson who defended her last year title from here in 11.29. World Indoors relay silver medallist 2006 Mary Wineberg clocked new PB while winning the 400 m in 51.19. Laverne Jones as second got new NR for US Virgin Islands 51.47. Long Jump winner Grace Upshaw got two good jumps, 660 (+3.1) and 657 (+1.2). From the british sprinters Montell Douglas was second at 100 m (11.35, but no PB due to +2.8). Donna Fraser was 4th in college finals (11.79+2.6) and 6th at 400 m (54.00) and Emma Duck third at 400mH (57.64). Bobby Kersee team won the 4x100 m in 43.75 (A. Felix, V. Powell, Madison, Lee).

Walter Dix world lead 20.19 at 200 m, junior world record marred by wind

COLLEGE PARK: Final day of Atlantic Coast Conference Championships was highlighted by excellent world lead of Florida State sprinter Walter Dix who won the 200 m finals in 20.19 (+0.2). Just 0.01 behind his best from 2005. Dix also helped his team to 4x100 m win in 38.78 (Bolden, Dix, Garvin, Clark) what is the second fastest time of the year. Travis Padgett won the 100 m in 10.22 (+0.8), but was slower than in heats by 0.01. Another favourte Jacoby Ford was disqualified after false start. Jamaican Ricardo Chambers fulfilled his 400 m role and won in 46.00. Dominic Berger was the best at high hurdles in windy 13.54 (+2.7). On the women side a new world junior record was marred by only slightly illegal wind +2.1. Kristi Catlin (born July 7, 1988) won the 100mH in 12.82 what is faster by 0.02 than the standing mark of Aliuska Lopez (CUB, 12.84, back in 1987). Her legal best is 13.15 from heats here on Friday. Second placed Shantia Moss was just 0.01 behind and 12.83 would be also a great PB for her. Florida State women registered very solid 3:32.11 at 4x400 m. From European side it should be noted that British runner Tom Lancashire won the 1500 m in 3:44.08. Swiss sprinter Cedric Nabe was in tie for 4th clocking 10.54 at 100 m.

Wariner starts the season with 44.66

WACO: Michael Johnson Invitational meet could not be better higlighted, but by the result of olympic and world champion Jeremy Wariner who is managed by Michael. He won his season opener in world leading 44.66. He also was the winner of his section at 200 m (20.81, +1.5) and ran second leg in the 4x400 m in the team of Waco All-Stars (timed 44.90). Baylor sprint hope Courtney Thomas achieved two new bests at 100 m (10.31, +0.6) and 200 m (20.63, +1.0). That was in another section than Wariner and he was able to beat former relay world champion Darvis Patton who clocked 20.81. At 400 m second place went to Jamaican Sanjay Ayre (45.37) and third to Darold Williamson (45.42). The Waco All-Stars in composition Ayre, Wariner, Shelton, Williamson clocked 3:05.14 at 4x440 yards.

On the women side Sanya Richards did not competed, but a world lead was registered. Asian Games 2006 gold medallist Huang Xiaoxiao from China clocked 55.81 at 400m Hurdles.

Spearmon windy 10.05 and 19.87, V. Campbell gets 22.39w

FAYETTEVILLE: World class sprinter Wallace Spearmon registered at John McDonnell Invitational fast sprint times, but with not allowed wind support. He won the 100 m in 10.05 (+2.6) and 200 m in 19.87 (+2.2). It is 8th fastest windy 200 m race ever. The kilo would be his best, the 200 m his second fastest (has 19.65 from Daegu meet and exactly 19.87 from World Cup win).

Olympic champion Veronica Campbell from Jamaica had her first finished 200 m since May last year and clocked also windy 22.39 (+2.7). No new bests due to wind also for female 100 m winner Latonia Wilson (11.13, +4.2) and Lauren Smith at 100 m Hurdles (12.94, +3.4). Estonian son of Olympic champion from 1980 Jaanus Uudmae also did not had the luck of PB as his 16.78 in Triple Jump were supported by +5.0. At least one good legal mark came from April Steiner in Pole Vault as she went over 450 cm. It is her outdoor best, she has from this indoors 460 cm.

Kerron Stewart two world leads 11.10 and 22.60, Donald Thomas 234 in High Jump

AUBURN: Three world leads happened at Auburn Invitational. Jamaican sprinting talent and this indoor NCAA Champion Kerron Stewart achieved 11.10 (+1.0) at 100 m and 22.60 (+1.0) at 200 m. The latter also her new outdoor best and school record. She also achieved windy 11.07 in the heats. Bahamian NCAA High Jump Champion Donald Thomas continues in his improvements. He started the outdoor season better than he finished the indoors. And it was not a bad end as he won the NCAA title with 233 cm. But now he achieved new world lead 234 cm! It looks there is lot more to come from an athlete who started with the High Jump only last year with 222 cm without spikes. It was the day for Bahamas as Shamar Sands got another NR at 110mH with 13.55 (+0.7). Bahamas world class 400 m runner Christine Amertil checked the shape with 23.00 second place at 200 m. Jamaican Steve Mullings won both male sprints in 10.47 and 20.80. Fernada Blakely was the best at 400 m in 45.80 and second placed Arismendy Peguero from Dominican Republic registered 45.98. Area decathlon record holder Maurice Smith from Jamaica showed great shot put shape as third with 17.41 m. He had 17.06 from last year in Gotzis. He also had 18 metres throw, but mistakenly walked out of the front of the ring and was charged a foul.

4x400 m world lead by LSU

BATON ROUGE: World fastest 4x400 m was registered at LSU Alumni Gold meet. Lousiana State University (Brooklyn Morris, Tanya Osbourne, Cynetheia Rooks, Deonna Lawrence – all US) achieved 3:30.13. Sprinters team of LSU got the second fastest of the season 43.26. Jamaican Nickiesha Wilson finally went under 56 seconds at 400 m Hurdles – also second fastest of the year 55.87. US Indoor Champion Lolo Jones had excellent season opener clocking 12.97 (0.0) at 100 m Hurdles. Guyana national record holder Marian Burnett got very good 800 m win in 2:01.32. Solid long jump marks were marred by wind – Brittany Reese 663 (+2.1) and Tanika Liburd 662 (+4.8, would be NR for St. Kitts).

On the men side relay olympic champion Derrick Brew won the 400 m (45.77). World triple jump champion Walter Davis had his first meet since last year World Cup win in Greece and got 16.78 (-1.9). Nice battle in long jump, but no 8 metres. John Moffitt got 796 and Miguel Pate 795 cm.

New NR for St. Kitts at 200 m

FORT WORTH: At TCU Invitational wind played its game. The kilo was supported by +3.9 so the 10.02 of DeBryan Blanton and 10.05 by Jamaican Marvin Anderson could not be new personal bests for both. The same goes to Marlon Odom´s 110m Hurdles 13.50 (+2.5). More luck had Virgil Hodge from St. Kitts in women sprints. First national record at 100 m (11.19) will not be recognised due to wind (+4.8), but the 200 m mark 22.81 yes, there the support was ok +1.1 m/s. French Jumper Gaelle Niare won HJ (180) and LJ (612, +3.7).

Whiting new shot best 20.27 m

LA JOLLA: At Triton Invitational the throwers delivered the best results. Jillian Camarena confirmed her second position in yearly world lists with shot put win 18.81 and second placed NCAA Champion Sarah Stevens registered new PB 18.40 m. South American hammer record holder Jenny Dahlgren from Argentina achieved another 70m+ mark with 70.33. New best for bronze medallist from this year indoor NCAA Ryan Whiting in Shot with 20.27 and Sean Shields as second also got 20.05. Former champion John Godina was 6th (18.55). In the sprints solid 200 m times by Greg Nixon (20.63, +0.9) and Carmelita Jeter (23.23, -0.6, PB).

Hargrove new PR 51.54

PRINCETON: World indoors 2006 relay silver medallist Monica Hargrove from Doyle Track Club won at Larry Ellis Invitational with new best of 51.54 at 400 m.

Woods gets PB 10.16

FORT COLLINS: This years US Indoor 60 m finalist John Woods used the Colorado Altitude help and clocked new 100 m best 10.16 (+1.9).

Blackwood season opener 46.59

AUSTIN: Larry Wade continues in running after his return, this time he won the 110mH in 13.61 (+1.8). Andra Manson went over 225 cm in High Jump and Commonwealth Games gold medallist 2002 Michael Blackwood (JAM) started the season with 46.59 win at 400 m. US Indoor bronze medallist Marshevet Hooker also competed outdoors for first time and won the 200 m in 22.95 (+2.6).

Laynes against the wind

EUGENE: Second day of Oregon Invitational brough another 20 metres shot result for Canadian Dylan Armstrong (20.14). Sprint veteran Jeff Laynes fighted against wind with wins 10.66 (-1.6) and 21.13 (.-0.8).

Other News

PARDUBICE (CZE, Apr 21): The Vine-Half Marathon was won as expected by Kenyan favourite Stanley Salil (1:03:29). Morrocan Said Azouzi was second (1:05:02) and another Kenyan Julius Kiptum Rop third (1:05:02). Petra Kaminkova was clear women winner in 1:13:03. Another Czech runner Veronika Brychcinova finished second (1:16:17) and Jasminka Guber from Bosna third (1:18:37).

TENERIFE (ESP): At a meeting which marked opening for a new track the hurdles record holder Jackson Quiňonez started the season with good 13.65.

ZLIN (CZE, Apr 21): Slovak hammer brother and sister started the season in solid mood. Marcel Lomnicky (last year bronze medallist in Beijing World Juniors) achieved 67.40 and his sister Nikola Lomnicka (still a junior) won the women competition registering 57.56 m.

HLBOKA (CZE, Apr 22): Best Czech marathon runner Pavel Faschingbauer tested his shape at 25 km road race and won clearly in 1:19:24.

BAMAKO (MLI, Apr 20): At Area Permit meet French 400m Hurdler Naman Keita registered a good win in 50.13. It is his former country. He remains in Africa and is scheduled to compete at 400 m flat distance next Saturday during IAAF GP in Dakar, Senegal.

Walking Action

CAMBORIU (BRA): During first day of Pan American Race Walking Cup world champion and olympic gold medallist Jefferson Perez from Ecuador fulfilled his favorite role. In the Santa Catarina state of Brasil he won the 20 km race in 1:25:08. Second place went to Gustavo Restrepo (COL) who was just 17 seconds behind (1:25:25). Women 20 km race brough gold medal for Central American Games 2006 winner Cristina Lopez from El Salvador clocking 1:39:21. Under 1:40 also second placed South American record holder Miriam Ramon (Ecuador) in 1:39:42.

ZITTAU (GER): Maik Berger won the German 50 km championships in new best 3:54:29, but missed the German Federation Osaka Standard 3:53. He had before 3:57:39 since 2004. Favourite and fourth at World Champs 2005 20 km race Andre Hohne dropped out in the second half due to muscle problems as www.leichtathletik.de reports. It looks like there will be no German entry in Osaka 50 km race. Second placed Mexican Jesus Sanchez went for the first time in his career under 4 hours with 3:57:08.
