Wilson Boit Kipketer before Marathon debut

DUSSELDORF: Former world champion (1997) and world record holder at 3000 m Steeple (7:59.08) Wilson Boit Kipketer from Kenya announced his marathon debut. He is so going in the steps of another former great steeple runner Bernard Barmasai who is running this weekend already as favourite in Vienna. Boit is scheduled to compete on May 6 at METRO Group Marathon in Dusseldorf, Germany. He is currently in preparation together with Wilfred Kigen who is Frankfurt Marathon winner 2005 und 2006. Another example is also Barcelona 1992 Olympic steeple winner Matthew Birir who is trying marathons. He achieved 2:11:43 as third in Brussels 2004.

Zhou plans Osaka and Beijing

LONDON: Chinese London Marathon winner Zhou Chunxiu said that she is planning to compete this year at World Championships in Osaka and another target is of course the olympic marathon in 2008 in her home country. "It would be nice to break her (Radcliffe) world record in my home country,“ she was quoted. Sunday London was her 13th marathon of the career, she started in March 2003 winning the national title in 2:34:16 at Xiamen. She already also has olympic experience beeing 33rd in Athens 2004. World record holder Paula Radcliffe has yet to confirm whether she will race over the marathon distance or on the track in Osaka, but definitely plans contesting the longer distance at Olympic level.

Her plans for this summer's outdoor campaign remain unconfirmed, having recently had a minor setback at a training camp in Colorado. As informed by David Martin Radcliffe has insisted she will be recovered and fit to compete in Japan, where she has the option of racing 10,000m or the marathon.

Prigge the female winner

ENSCHEDE: Addition to Sunday marathon is the name of female winner. It was 43 years old Ingrid Prigge with 2:42:31. It was her third marathon, the fastest was last year in Amsterdam (2:41:06). No other woman achieved sub 3 hours time.

Richards was ill

WACO: World best female athlete of the year Sanya Richards did not started her season over the weekend at Michael Johnson Invitaitonal. She confirmed for IAAF that she was sick with a bad flu during the week. Her next races are remaining to be confirmed, over the weekend she is scheduled to appear at Penn Relays.

Feofanova is not planning all Golden League Meets

MOSCOW: Former Pole Vault world record holder Svetlana Feofanova from Russia is not planning to compete at all Golden League Meetings despite her event beeing for first time on the programme of the prestigious series. „She will start the season as usual early July, not earlier. She needs more time to be in shape after the long indoor season,“ confirmed her agent Mikhail Gusev. Indoors she competed in five events and won gold at European Indoor Championships in Birmingham. She jumped 476 her highest since 2004.

Thorkildsen is the next confirmed athlete for Golden League

OSLO: Reigning Olympic and European javelin throw winner Andreas Thorkildsen from Norway is the latest Golden League signature for the coming season. Before him other top European athletes Yelena Isinbayeva for Pole Vault and Tia Hellebaut and Kajsa Bergqvist for High Jump confirmed they will compete at all 6 meetings of the series. Thorkildsen aims about jackpot, last year from 15 competitions he lost only three times.

Superb distances in Japan

KOBE: First sub 28 minutes 10 000 m times of the year were registered at Hyogo Relays in Kobe, Japan. In total 8, four in two races, dominated by Kenyans living and training in Japan. Winner Martin Mathathi came close to his best from the same meet in 2005 (27:08.42) with his 27:09.90. He could be a threat because week before he also got new 5000 m best in Yokohama 13:13.06. Third Josphat Ndambiri clocked 27:28.38 and fourth John Kariuki 27:30.50. In second race junior Micah Njeru (18) won in excellent 27:51.81. Other three runners behind him scored also bests (27:51.92 Hillary Chenonge, 27:52.78 Bekele Gebretsadik,ETH and 27:56.63 Cyrus Njui).

Women 10 000 m winner Lucy Wangui (KEN) achieved second fastest time of the year 31:33.20. Second placed Megumi Kinukawa got new national junior record 31:35.27. She will be only 18 in August and jumped into 11th place on junior all-time list.

WALKING

CAMBORIU (BRA): Pan American Race Walking Cup ended with 50 km race on Sunday. Alvaro Garcia from Mexico won in 4:04:52, second Freddy Hernandez from Colombia achieved 4:05:16. Mexican legend Bernardo Segura was leading until 15 km and dropped out after next 2 km. In total 104 walkers from 14 countries participated.

SAN PIETRO CLARENZA (ITA): Good shape confirmed by Olympic winner Ivano Brugnetti at 3rd Etna Race Walking. He won the 5 km race in 19:30. Second placed Giorgio Rubino registered 20:04 and third Alessandro Gandellini 20:21. Spanish former world champion Jesus Angel Garcia was only 7th as fidal website informs.

BRIEFS

QUARTEIRA (POR): National 15 km road race champions are Luis Jesus (45:16) and Jessica Augusto (51:04). Men contest was close as Rui Pedro Silva as second was only 2 seconds behind (45:18) and one more second later was third Paulo Gomes (45:19). Female win was far more clearer, by 1:12 min.

LA LAGUNA (ESP): Solid half-marathon win 1:02:07 for Jacob Yator, second placed also Kenyan Peter Korir achieved 1:02:40.

KORSCHENBROICH (GER): Top German runner Irina Mikitenko won the City-Race at 5 km in new course record 15:41. She was able to beat Kenyans Caroline Chepkwony (16:07) and Monica Otwor (16:15). On the men 10 km top three as expected for Kenya – Moses Kigen (29:19.21), Collins Kibet (29:19.95) and Nicolas Koech (29:20.71).

GIJON (ESP): High quality road mile was won by European 5000 m champion Jesus Espana. He has the same time as second placed olympic medallist Rui Silva from Portugal (both 4:15). Third Sergio Gallardo was one second behind. European silver medallist from 2002 at 800 m Mayte Martinez was the best woman in 4:54, European 5000 m champion Martha Dominguez finished in this short race for her fourth (4:58).

BARCELONA (ESP): The 6th Sagrada Familia Mile was won by European Indoor Champion Cosimo Caliandro from Italy in 4:13. Second Mohamed Kallouche (MAR) had the same time, third Juan Carlos Higuero was one second behind (4:14).

LJUBLJANA (SLO): Early national record for Slovenia. As www.siol.net reports Ana Susic achieved 62.03 in hammer and betterd her own NR from last year by 24 cm.

ORLANDO (USA): Another fast High School time from Florida. Jeffery Demps clocked 10.34 at 100 m.

GREENSBORO (USA): World medallist James Carter achieved 49.43 at 400 mHurdles, Jamaican Adam Findlay as second also under 50 seconds (49.65).

YPSILANTI (USA): Fast 1500 m was registered by Philip Lagat (HM best of 1:04:26) who got 3:39.81. More known Boaz Cheboiywo as second achieved 3:40.51.

BOURNEMOUTH (GBR): Dan Pembroke achieved very promising best in javelin with 700 g implement recording 71.68 m. He will be in July only 16, so one year younger than the most of the athletes for U17 World Champs in Ostrava.

TRENTO (ITA): Italian hammer thrower Marco Lingua came close to his PB with 77.10 m over the weekend. His best from last year is 77.66 m.

OBITUARY

MOUNTAIN VIEW: Track and Field News through its website headlines service informs about the sudden death of shot put hero Parry O´Brien after an heart-attack. He was double olympic champion (1952 and 1956) and world record holder. In 1953-1959 he achieved 10 world records and as first ever went over 18 and 19 metres. He celebrated 75 years in January. In Mel Watman´s all-time rankings he is number one with 96 points, only behind him Ralph Rose (92), Randy Barnes (91) and Randy Matson (76). He was seven times world ranked number one by Track and Field News.
