Austrian Team shows good shape ahead of IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton

Austrian Athletic Federation has announced a team of five promising athletes to compete at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada (19-25 July).

Lukas Weißhaidinger eyes a double performance in the Shot Put and the Discus Throw. The 18 year old stepped onto the international scene with a fourth place at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Bressanone 2009 in the Shot Put. He went on to win two gold medals at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Tampere, Finland, one with the shot, the other with the discus. The talented athlete who grew up on a farm in Taufkirchen, Upper Austria, showed great shape recently when he achieved 19.79m (6kg) in the shot put at a meeting in Ried, Austria. As the throwing circle was some 10 centimetres higher than the ground outside this was not considered as an official result. Nevertheless, the performance remains very remarkable indeed.

Middle distance runner Jennifer Wenth leads a quartet of female Austrian athletes in Moncton. Like Weißhaidinger she has prepared for a double goal. On the opening day she will run the 3,000m. Her best of 9:30.72 might well be reviewed at the end of this race. More experienced at the 1500m she improved her national junior record to a very respectable 4:14.02 on 25 June in Nancy, France. Twelfth at the European Junior Championships in Novi Sad, Serbia, 2009, she wants to build on this in Moncton.

Kira Grünberg who turns 17 only in August will test herself against the very best in the Pole Vault. She cleared 4.01m at regional championships in June for a national junior record and will be part of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. Marina Kraushofer showed very consistent shape in the Long Jump this season. In the run-up to Moncton she leaped to a personal best of 6.35m to take the national title on 10 July. Multi talented Lisa Egarter takes part in the High Jump. Injury problems prevented her from competing in the Heptathlon but with a personal best of 1.83m she can do herself justice in her strongest event.

“I expect at least one result in the top-10. But all our athletes have the potential to qualify for the final”, says Christian Röhrling, coach for the Austrian Athletics Federation.
